Historia
Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) was an intrepid explorer and the most famous scientist of his age. His restless life was packed with adventure and discovery, whether climbing the highest volcanoes in the world or racing through anthrax-infested Siberia. He came up with a radical vision of nature, that it was a complex and interconnected global force and did not exist for man's use alone. Ironically, his ideas have become so accepted and widespread that he has been nearly forgotten.

needed more science
Revisado: 09-19-22
There was a lot more politics than I expected, and a lot less scientific theories and the ramifications and their finer points. It was far more a travelog than it was a science textbook. Some good vignettes, though, various prominent thinkers and their interactions with Humboldt and his ideas

very good story, fine narration
Revisado: 06-02-22
the narrator's voice was somewhat annoying, and not at all the masculine voice you'd want for such a story. My first Ambrose book, I found he lived up to his reputation; excellent research. Not a great writer of prose - no beauty at all in his sentences - just straight reporting.

Historia
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

Great story and well told!
Revisado: 03-23-22
Great story, very good narration, went on a bit too long in the middle with a little more detail than necessary about days and days at sea. Very much worth it, though, to hear how it ends!

Historia
Frontier: the word carries the inevitable scent of the West. But before Custer or Lewis and Clark, before the first Conestoga wagons rumbled across the Plains, it was the East that marked the frontier - the boundary between complex Native cultures and the first colonizing Europeans. Here is the older, wilder, darker history of a time when the land between the Atlantic and the Appalachians was contested ground - when radically different societies adopted and adapted the ways of the other, while struggling for control of what all considered to be their land.

Historia
In her late 30's, Rosaria encountered something that turned her world upside down - the idea that Christianity, a religion she had regarded as problematic, might be right about who God was. That idea seemed to fly in the face of the people and causes that she most loved. What follows is a story of what she describes as a train wreck at the hand of the supernatural. These are her secret thoughts about those events, written as only a reflective English professor could.

incredible insight into a very foreign lifestyle
Revisado: 05-26-21
A leftist, feminist lesbian becomes a homeschooling Christian, married to a man. She explains the events in life that caused her to adopt the former and latter lifestyles, and shares her particular brand of Christianity in the process. If you've ever wondered, "how in the world can they believe the things they do? ", this story will certainly go a long way in answering that.

Historia
With the Beatles, John Lennon surpasses his youthful dreams, achieving a level of superstardom that defies classification. “We were the best bloody band there was,” he says. “There was nobody to touch us.” Nobody except the original nowhere man, Mark David Chapman. Chapman once worshipped his idols from afar - but now harbors grudges against those, like Lennon, whom he feels betrayed him. He’s convinced Lennon has misled fans with his message of hope and peace. And Chapman’s not staying away any longer.

old material poorly presented
Revisado: 01-16-21
If you have read much Beatles material, you'll find little new here, and very little having anything to do with Lennon's "last days." Maybe 5% of the book actually pertained to Mark David Chapman and the day he shot Lennon. The other 95% is a poorly written summary of Lennon's career in music, all of which you can read in other books with much better presentation. The prose were very dry, almost like a history textbook, lacking in color or insight, evoking no emotions. It's a short listen, and yet I kinda want my 8 hours back.

Historia
Three years before David Bowie died, he shared a list of 100 books that changed his life. His choices span fiction and nonfiction, literary and irreverent, and include timeless classics alongside eyebrow-raising obscurities. In 100 short essays, music journalist John O'Connell studies each book on Bowie's list and contextualizes it in the artist's life and work. Heartfelt, analytical, and totally original, Bowie's Bookshelf is one part epic reading guide and one part biography of a music legend.

mildly interesting

good narrator. the sexual debauchery was rife, even for a bowie book, and the left wing politics were more abundant that most material covering bowie. as sometimes happens with bowie, I'm left longing for more about his artistic brilliance, less about the perversion he escaped in his more mature years. still, there were some interesting insights into what Bowie found in these books. for a diehard fan, I'd say give it a try

Historia
Low is a kaleidoscope in which Bowie's obsessions and traits explode into fragments and reform in a new pattern. Sonically, it is hugely adventurous: combining a driving R&B rhythm section with the experimental soundscapes of Brian Eno, it evolves a whole new musical language. Thematically, it's the sound of a man struggling to get well. Bowie has often talked about his fear of insanity.

mediocre, some insights
Revisado: 06-12-20
a surprising amount of time is spent on anything other than Low. a great deal of time spent on pointing out Bowie's drug use, insinuating that he got all his ideas from someone else and had little originality, what a drama queen he was, sordid affairs, the unfortunately too frequently visited tabloid garbage. a lot of time is spent on station to station, an album I love, but this is supposed to be about low.

Historia
Simon Critchley first encountered David Bowie in the early '70s, when the singer appeared on Britain's most-watched music show, Top of the Pops. His performance of "Starman" mesmerized Critchley: it was "so sexual, so knowing, so strange". Two days later Critchley's mum bought a copy of the single; she liked both the song and the performer's bright orange hair (she had previously been a hairdresser). The seed of a lifelong love affair was thus planted in the mind of her son, aged 12.

devout bowie fans will find some new insights into Bowie as a person, what he believed, as well as his music. For the price and time spent listening, you might as well. it's artistic and philosophical, not pop culture anti-intellectualism.
