This interesting (and well narrated) tale weaves seemingly disparate actions into a spellbinding and sadly beautiful whole.

I like Roland Martin and always enjoy listening to his views. I appreciated this critique of white America — his logic, his presentation and examples. I especially appreciated his call to action to white people who are also looking for, hoping for, and working for a just nation that actually aspires to its ideals. Now is a critical time for white America to stand up to and stop racism, misogyny and white supremacy. We white people who oppose white supremacy must be on the front lines if we truly want liberty and freedom for all.

A beautiful narration of a harsh tale as seen through the eyes of a boy. So honest it hurts while one chuckles at the absurdity of it all. The story brings John Brown to life and honors him … while sharing all his flaws and foibles. I’m not a believer in a Christian god, but this story rekindles my respect for those who follow the real Christian tradition.

This just went from bad to worse. Why spend time and money to produce something like this? Thank goodness it cost nothing. Thank goodness I kept busy and my time wasn’t wasted.

Nope. I have been enjoying listening to the ridiculously implausible adventures of the irascible Agatha Raisin all this way, but Alison Larkin’s narration takes listening out of the land of a silly pleasure and into the land of overdone satirical absurdities. I thought I would have the Agatha-Charles-ghost of handsome James triangle slowly working it’s way out over time, but, alas Alison! I bid them all an early and forlorn adieu. They’ll have to carry on without me.

It’s almost impossible to focus on the story with the absurd narration. Over the top ridiculously voiced.

Difficult to review because I found the narrator so hard to understand. Mr Batchelor narrated male voices and conversations beautifully, but dropped into a rhythmic cadence during narration that seemed to ignore punctuation and the ups and downs of the story. The women’s voices were pretty awful/funny — they sounded feeble and confused. Who could tell who was saying what when? It all became a mumble, which is so close to Stephen Blackpool’s summation of Hard Times … a muddle. I’d like to listen again to someone else narrate the story to catch all that I missed.

The story was so sad, more realistic than many of Dickens’ stories with happier endings, and his lovely humor shows up very little, but definitely there. Whelp hunting? The appropriate names, the comeuppances. It’s there.

If only Dickens’ understanding and compassion could be instilled in every reader. If only.

So many angry nasty people. All major characters in the story are shallow, mean, and narcissistic. Not one worth caring about. Couldn’t finish the story. Didn’t care about the angry nasty characters or the story. Waste of time.

I found the paltry number of downloads and reviews of this excellent examination of entitlement to be rather telling. Entitlement to comfort and an expectation that those so entitled will not be challenged is as alive as it ever was. But if such entitled persons understood the cost to themselves and their loved ones, perhaps they would let go a bit and in so doing, grow. Risk the ruffled feathers and listen!

Four stars for content because I didn’t appreciate the reliance on movies to describe behavior in one chapter, although our movies and popular culture are tools to perpetuate the status quo. Four stars for the narration because, while expressive, engaging, and precise, the narrator continued to sound exasperated and unbelieving throughout the book that this entitlement still goes on today.

Those with power don’t give it up easily. Believe it. They’re hurting themselves and everyone else and everything else by holding onto it. Letting it go wouldn’t hurt, it would equalize power and end so much hurt. But if only they’d risk reading and looking inwards…. The numbers show us their unwillingness.
