Great story telling
Revisado: 01-07-25
I never would have read Homer on my own. Stephen Fry makes the story accessible and engaging - opening up an ancient world, culture, geography, mythology.

Riveting

I put it on well before bedtime and couldn't stop listening until the end. Needless to say, this negatively affected my sleep score.
Next time, I will not begin a Grainger book in the evening.

Truth and Justice at Work
Revisado: 10-01-22
I found this book eye opening and have great respect for the Author, as they show the current status of FBI expertise and processes in solving infamous, heinous crimes by reviewing cold cases. Just thinking of the crimes described, I came to admire the courage and fortitude of what it takes to investigate them as one's job, and to do this while understanding the vast numbers of victims who remain unknown in popular culture, their cases unsolved.
I personally am dismayed and ashamed to recognize how quickly I have dismissed innocence and passed judgement without knowing more than a few facts and/or accusations.
I learned a lot in this book about what it takes to do this job well - integrity, an unbiased approach, a profound commitment to discovering the truth and providing justice. Reading this book, I feel that I became a better citizen and a better person. I also feel hopeful that there are those committed to raising the bar, and working to train and empower investigators.
I wish them success in their endeavor.

Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

Loved everything about this story.
Revisado: 09-01-22
I haven't read every book Ann Patchett has written, but this one is the favorite of the ones I have read. And I cannot imagine a better reader than Tom Hanks. Yes, this is one of those books I'm sorry to have finished. In my mind it goes on and on like a river, like life.

A strange letter appears on a city councillor’s desk in Birmingham, England, laying out an elaborate plot by Islamic extremists to infiltrate the city’s schools. The plot has a code name: Operation Trojan Horse. The story soon explodes in the news and kicks off a national panic. By the time it all dies down, the government has launched multiple investigations, beefed up the country’s counterterrorism policy, revamped schools and banned people from education for the rest of their lives. To Hamza Syed, who is watching the scandal unfold in his city, the whole thing seemed … off. Because ...

Impressive Journalism
Revisado: 08-24-22
I found this podcast riveting and finished it over several days, thinking about it as I fell asleep and when I woke up. If only the standards followed by these journalists were practiced by more people in their profession. I was impressed by their dogged determination in pursuing the many threads, relooking at the evidence in light of new revelations. But it wasn't easy observing all the closed doors, and disinterest which they came up against.
This podcast shines a light on the bigotry, racism and Islamaphobia which permeates the dominant white culture in Birmingham and Britain. The media and politicians seem more interested in making headlines than in searching for truth.
I'm saddened to see that Britain struggles with white supremacy and oppression of people of color just as we do in the US, but I think this in-depth, nitty gritty reporting is a necessary part of increasing awareness.

Revisado: 06-18-22
First read the series as a teenager, and now I'm retired and surprised by how much I remember. I recently read The Hobbit again and loved Andy Serkis' reading, so not surprised at how well he performs this book. Highly recommend. And now I've got book two to get to!

Historia
You might think that perfect harmony is the defining characteristic of healthy relationships, but the truth is that human interactions are messy, complicated, and confusing. And according to renowned psychologist Ed Tronick and pediatrician Claudia Gold, that is not only okay, it is actually crucial to our social and emotional development. In The Power of Discord they show how working through the inevitable dissonance of human connection is the path to better relationships with romantic partners, family, friends, and colleagues.

Where to begin? This book has upended my understanding of relationships
Revisado: 02-08-22
I'm filled with hope with this new paradigm, and while I suspect I may need to reread and engage with the information as it pertains to my relationships which is so radically different from my beliefs about relating to others up until now, I m inspired to find a deeper, more open and trusting way to relate to myself and others.
I feel very grateful to the authors for presenting this information in such a thoughtful, cohesive and engaging book.
