From the day she was born, Charkes was in the midst of her purpose. She was the first of her parents' 9 children and eventually became the only mother her siblings knew. In a conscious but unconscious manner, she moved about life with intention, despite dire circumstances.

As a child she was an adult-- guiding, caring, loving and parenting. She never complained or stumbled, she just focused on the moment, understanding that her God-given courage, and audaciousness was not only necessary for her future but also for the future of those akin to her.

Perseverance and determination

This is an outstanding read. Telling your truth is therapeutic and to hear one’s humble beginnings is always refreshing. The perseverance shown, not to allow circumstances to keep you from your dreams and aspirations is shown all through these memoir. The author is a great person. Again excellent read.

What a story of resilience

Charkes is technically my first cousin on my dad’s side. Her mom & my dad are siblings. I didn’t grow up knowing much about my dad’s family until I got older. Her perspective of her upbringing broke my heart but also showed so much strength. I’m not as close with my cousins as I would like to be but this book gave me so much history to inquire about. I loved every chapter! I listened to the entire book in one day! Charkes, thank you for sharing your story. It’s so important. Thank you for your light 🤍
