Historia
In Victorian England, orphan Mary Quinn lives on the edge. Sentenced as a thief at the age of 12, she’s rescued from the gallows by a woman posing as a prison warden. In her new home, Miss Scrimshaw’s Academy for Girls, Mary acquires a singular education, fine manners, and a surprising opportunity. The school is a cover for the Agency — an elite, top secret corps of female investigators with a reputation for results — and at 17, Mary’s about to join their ranks.

Who exactly is Danziger? He's a writer of letters for illiterate immigrants on Manhattan's Lower East Side - "a steadfast practitioner of concealing and forgetting" for his clients, and perhaps for himself: He hints at a much worldlier past. What and whoever he really is or has been, he has a seemingly boundless knowledge of the city and its denizens. And he knows much more than the mere identity of the floating corpse.

Historia
After a tornado rips through her town, store owner Abigail comes across a piece of fabric from a wedding dress among the devastation. Abigail is moved to start collecting other swatches of fabric she finds - her neighbor’s kitchen curtains, a man’s necktie, a dog’s bed - which she stashes in shopping bags. As she pursues her seemingly absurd quest, horrible realities spark the question, “What kind of a God would allow such tragedy?”

Predictable but charming
This was a great romantic adventure. Characters who were admirable from the beginning but still were able to learn and grow thru their adventure. Fantastically written and read.

Enjoy this story over and over
I read the story of Lucy, Nick and Colin and then listened to it. I enjoyed their journey of letting go. In the audio version I think Nick and Lucy should have had N.Y. accents to balance Colin's British. I could have used a few more descriptors of attire since fashion was shifting in that time period. Lucy's skirt was tight for one scene but in the tunnels it seemed she had lots of fabric. I wish I had put together it was a continuation of the Biblical story of Jacob and Esau from the beginning. I enjoyed learning words like sandhog and seeing texting from the 1900s in Morse code. The Early 1900s were changing times in NYC and it was fun to walk through them with these characters.

Surprises make this story even better
i truly enjoyed this story and its characters. The plot has plenty of twists and unexpected turns, with characters making thoughtful decisions that bring courage and respect to mind more than once. The direction of the story was never stagnant...it kept me guessing, sometimes irritated because i thought the character made the wrong choice, but always intrigued. A great read, and i will definitely look for more books by Elizabeth Camden!
