Acerca de esta escucha
It all started with a storm, a real gully washer, the type that comes racing across the plains with driving rain, howling winds, and hail as big as your fist. If it hadn't been for the stranger in buckskins, the Jakes family would have been in serious trouble. Little did they know, the storm was just the beginning of their struggles.
They'd come to Colorado to raise a new breed of horse. Along the trail they would follow were new friends, old enemies, and the land. At times it was hard to tell which ones were the most dangerous. It would take all of their fortitude and the help of kind-hearted strangers to keep the dream alive.

Historia
Part epic of Texas, part classic coming-of-age story, part unflinching examination of the bloody price of power, The Son is a gripping and utterly transporting novel that maps the legacy of violence in the American west with rare emotional acuity, even as it presents an intimate portrait of one family across two centuries. Eli McCullough is just twelve-years-old when a marauding band of Comanche storm his Texas homestead and brutally murder his mother and sister, taking him as a captive.

Written to commemorate the Bicentennial in 1976, James A. Michener's magnificent saga of the West is an enthralling celebration of the frontier. Brimming with the glory of America's past, the story of Colorado - the Centennial State - is manifested through its people: Lame Beaver, the Arapaho chieftain and warrior, and his Comanche and Pawnee enemies; Levi Zendt, fleeing with his child bride from the Amish country; and the cowboy, Jim Lloyd, who falls in love with a wealthy and cultured Englishwoman, Charlotte Seccombe.

In 1829, Jacob and Martin left Kentucky to become Mountain Men, trappers of the Rocky Mountains. The rugged mountains that lay beyond America's frontier remained mostly unexplored. In those days, when beaver were plentiful and the buffalo roamed freely, the killing was good. The two young men would also find that life would be hardscrabble in the high frontier. They would face grizzly bears and hostile Indians. And they would risk horse wrecks and mountain storms to trade their furs each year at "rendezvous".

Cowboy stories and movies about the Wild West are full of amazing characters. Yet many of the lawmen we think of as heroes were anything but - some were violent scoundrels and outlaws themselves. Among all the lawmen of the frontier, one man stands out as a true hero: Bass Reeves. In his day, Bass Reeves was the most successful federal marshal in the United States. True to the mythical code of the West, he never drew his gun first. He rounded up hundreds of outlaws and was shot at countless times but was never hit. Bass Reeves was born into slavery.

In 1836, when she was nine years old, Cynthia Ann Parker was kidnapped by Comanche Indians. This is the story of how she grew up with them, mastered their ways, married one of their leaders, and became, in every way, a Comanche woman. It is also the story of a proud and innocent people whose lives pulsed with the very heartbeat of the land. It is the story of a way of life that is gone forever.

From humble beginnings in rural Tennessee to his heroic death defending the Alamo, frontiersman, adventurer, and politician David Davy Crockett embodies the spirit and ideals of the national character. Even during his lifetime, tales of the sharpshooting, skilled woodsman were - to his delight - told, retold, and elaborated on. As a US congressman, the former Creek War militiaman steadfastly opposed President Andrew Jackson's Indian Removal Act.

Very entertaining - hard to put down
I really enjoyed this book. I enjoy Westerns, and this book had a nice mixture of perspective from both the "white man" and the Native American, as well as Spanish culture. I really enjoyed the characters, especially Martha, and thought that they were really well-developed. This book definitely held my attention throughout its entirety. I listened to the Audible audio version of this book narrated by Michael Welte. I thought he was a great choice for the narrator because he has a very deep and gritty voice that just enhanced the book even more. Overall, a very entertaining book - I'm glad I had a chance to listen to this one.

great story, great history.
a great story for horse lovers though the reader seems less than professional . while creative liberties are taken in historical accuracy, the story acts as a great narrative in the creation of the American Quarter Horse Breed.

A good western...priceless!
There’s nothing like a good western to cleanse the palette of all the post-apocalypse tales. This western by Edd Voss is especially satisfying. The characters are well-developed and genuine. The stories of well-known mountain men and trappers lend authenticity and history. The conflicts between whites and Indians are portrayed accurately. The solemn tone of the men when they speak of the land, the changes coming due to the settlers, and the loss of the way of life hark back to the romanticism of the old west. The narration by Michael Welte is excellent, his deep gritty voice is perfect and brings the story to life. All-in-all I truly enjoyed this story. I’m also excited that this is the first volume of a series and that I have the second volume in-hand to continue the adventure. There’s already a hint of a blossoming love interest for the main character Roy. That just adds another interesting angle to the already wonderful tale. A Great Listen
A New Breed
: Edd Voss
This author has given the listener a wonderful historical western fiction. The Civil War has ended and some easterners want to move west to start over. Have they traded the Civil War for Indian Wars?
There are soldiers, Indians, scouts, wagon train travelers; but who are good and who are bad? Kidnapped women that need rescued. Romance blooms between the settlers
and locals.
Listen to this excellent story to see who will work together and who will fight alone. A great way to understand how some of our country was settled.
The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed. Michael Welte made me feel as if I were right there experiencing everything for myself!!!

Excellent tale of settling the West
This audiobook with keep you captivated with its tales of pioneer days and of settling the West. Set just as the civil war is coming to an end, it gives a taste of both the white man’s and the Native American’s prospective. There is both a sense of loss and of hope, as one way of life comes to an end and another begins. The beauty of the environment, the difficulties of change, the need for love and the reality that there are good people and bad people within all races comes through well in this story. The narrators accents and deep, mellow voice fit this story perfectly; invoking the feeling of the wildness, danger and the unpredictability of life in the West. You soon become attached to the characters and want to see then succeed, while at the same time you mourn for the loss of freedom and the native’s way of life. I do hope the author produces more audiobooks with these characters, as I would love to hear more of their lives.

Looking forward to more
Mr. Voss has woven a story out of history and fiction that appeals to us raised on westerns and books about the old west. He puts a lot of time into his period research and it shows in his work.
My only complaint is with the narration. Sound quality was excellent but I hope the narrator improves his skill before the next book.
I know Edd will be writing more and I look forward to it and wish him great success.

When Men Were Men
If you are nostalgic or are longing for a good, classic Western, then you'll enjoy this book. It's a story of a hardened mountain man that takes it upon himself to help out a family of settlers making their way across the plains in search of a better life in the West. The book has a very authentic feel as the author weaves bits and pieces about how life was back then into the fabric of the main story. The narrator has about the perfect voice and tone for this kind of story. He has a casual, laid back way of reading the story, and with his deep voice, I sometim
