Acerca de esta escucha

In A Small Town, 12 conspirators meticulously plan to throw open all the gates to the prison that contains them, so that more than a thousand convicts may escape and pour into the nearby small town. The newly freed prisoners rape, murder, and destroy the town - burning down homes and businesses. An immense search ensues, but the 12 who plotted it all get away.

After two years, all efforts by the local and federal police agencies have been in vain. The mayor and city attorney meet, and Leah Hawkins, a six-foot, two-inch former star basketball player and resident good cop, is placed on sabbatical so that she can tour the country learning advanced police procedures. The sabbatical is merely a ruse, however, as her real job is to track the infamous 12. And kill them.

Leah's mission takes her across the country, from Florida to New York, from California to an anti-government settlement deep in the Ozarks. Soon, the surviving fugitives realize what she is up to, and a race to kill or be killed ensues. Full of exhilarating twists and surprisingly resonant, A Small Town will sweep listeners along on Leah's quest for vengeance.

Good not great

Story lacked excitement and anticipation like earlier books. Last chapter was not needed or just missed the mark.

This has to be made into a movie

Great story, great characters. Would make a great movie or better still a mini series.

Surprise Officer

I loved this book. The story flowed smoothly and the author didn't insert extraneous descriptions. I also loved Leah's mission.

A revenge story

I am becomming a Thomas Perry fan. Another well written book that kept me reading. Small Town tragedy with a revenge theme. First recommendation for TP is Old Man, but this one is good too. Following a recent common theme there is a lot of "how to" description.

Perry Doesn't Disappoint

Action... adventure... all mixed with the stink of gun smoke and smeared with GSR!!! As always, Perry is a craftsman and Cristina Delaine is the perfect actress to bring Perry's ensemble to life. I wish more male writers would allow for a female voice. But then, most male authors lack Perry's talent. Yeah, Perry tends to leap over-the-top, but that's entertainment.

Loved this well written and developed story! Thomas Perry NAILS it!

Thomas Perry continues to amaze me with his creative story lines, and his well written and developed plot lines. I’m hooked. Please ask Mr. Perry to NEVER retire. He’s my favorite author ATM. Really enjoyed this listen. The narrator is perfect. I’m going to try some more of her books.

Great story, bad narration

I give the story of 'A Small Town' 4 stars, but only 3 overall. This is primarily due to the narration. The male voices are almost comical and identical. It seems that the narrator doesn't feel there are anymore necessary dynamics to voicing a male character beyond talking with an artificially deep voice. It sounds ridiculous, and it really tried my patience. I guess that it is to the stories credit though that I stuck with it throughout the end.

**minor spoiler** in this paragraph

My only complaint with the story (again: minor spoiler) was the primary motivation given to the protagonist being an affair she had with a man, who died on the night of the invasion, whose wife had MS. It is kind of vague / not directly stated whether or not the wife knew and tacitly approved / accepted it due to her condition and her wanting her husband to be happy or whatever but, either way, it made the protagonist and her lover, for the short part of the story where he is featured, both completely unlikeable to me. Neither of them ever seem to convey any sense of guilt, or even struggle with the slightest conflict, with it. It certainly was not to the extent that I was rooting against her, it'd be almost impossible given how loathsome the antagonists are (it's impossible to feel anything for them except a desire to WANT them as dead as possible), but I also didn't feel like I was fully in her corner. I guess it seemed like an unnecessary thing to provide as her motivation, but maybe I'm just being too much of a Puritan.

If you've heard this narrator before and enjoy her, then nothing should stop you from checking this out. It's an interesting, fairly unique, concept. I don't know what anyone's personal threshold for narration is, so that is my only warning about the book. I think I have a maybe unfairly high standard set by narrators like Will Patton, George Guidell, etc... A great female narrator whose name I cannot recall right now is the one who reads 'Main Street' by Sinclair Lewis. She is someone to look for who has a great, dynamic range when voicing characters.

Not great

This narration is very poor. Overacted and unconvincing. The story isn’t one of Perry’s best, but the narration drags it down.
