Resumen del Editor
Brought to you by Penguin.
This Penguin Classic is performed by Julian Rhind-Tutt, star of Green Wing, also known for his roles in The Madness of King George and Tomb Raider. This definitive recording includes an Introduction by Richard Maxwell.
After eighteen years as a political prisoner in the Bastille the aging Dr Manette is finally released and reunited with his daughter in England. There two very different men, Charles Darnay, an exiled French aristocrat, and Sydney Carton, a disreputable but brilliant English lawyer, become enmeshed through their love for Lucie Manette. From the tranquil lanes of London, they are all drawn against their will to the vengeful, bloodstained streets of Paris at the height of the Reign of Terror and soon fall under the lethal shadow of La Guillotine.

They look alike, but they live in very different worlds. Tom Canty, impoverished and abused by his father, is fascinated with royalty. Edward Tudor, heir to the throne of England, is kind and generous but wants to run free and play in the river - just once. How insubstantial their differences truly are becomes clear when a chance encounter leads to an exchange of clothing - and roles. The pauper finds himself caught up in the pomp and folly of the royal court, and the prince wanders horror-stricken through the lower strata of English society.

Historia
First published in 1873, The Gilded Age is both a biting satire and a revealing portrait of post-Civil War America - an age of corruption when crooked land speculators, ruthless bankers, and dishonest politicians voraciously took advantage of the nation's peacetime optimism. With his characteristic wit and perception, Mark Twain and his collaborator, Charles Dudley Warner, attack the greed, lust, and naiveté of their own time in a work that endures as a valuable social document and one of America's most important satirical novels.

Historia
Just before Christmas in 1843, a debt-ridden and dispirited Charles Dickens wrote a small book he hoped would keep his creditors at bay. His publisher turned it down, so Dickens used what little money he had to put out A Christmas Carol himself. He worried it might be the end of his career as a novelist. The book immediately caused a sensation. And it breathed new life into a holiday that had fallen into disfavor, undermined by lingering Puritanism and the cold modernity of the Industrial Revolution.

Historia
Through a series of calculated moves that involve death and a large inheritance, a small community is rocked and shrouded in mystery at the hands of the conniving Sir Percival Glyde, who is interested only in making himself wealthy at the hands of others.... Celebrated as one of the first popular mystery novels, The Woman in White, by Wilkie Collins, skillfully incorporates the twisting and turning of more than a few plot lines that all manage to converge beautifully at the end of the work.

Charlotte Brontë's life contained all the drama and tragedy of the great Gothic novels it inspired. Like Jane Eyre, she was raised motherless on remote Yorkshire moors and sent away to a brutally strict boarding school at a young age. Charlotte grew up and watched helplessly as, one by one, her five beloved siblings sickened and died; by the end of her short life, she was the only child of the Brontë clan remaining.

A sinister masterpiece, Our Mutual Friend was Dickens' last completed novel. It is perhaps his ultimate vision of a dark, macabre London and the corrupting power of money.

Historia
James Joyce’s landmark novel traces the course of three characters on one summer day in Dublin. First, there’s middle-aged wanderer and appeasing cuckold Leopold Bloom. He crosses paths with Stephen Dedalus, a young aspiring writer flirting with indulgence. Among a gallery of generous, ebullient, and brawling Dubliners, Bloom and Dedalus find in each other, for a few hours, a spiritual father and son. Then there’s Molly, Leopold’s wife. Conflicted about love, marriage, motherhood, and sexual longing, she’ll spend her afternoon with a lover.

Historia
From the echo of the first line ‘It was the best of times, it was the worst of times’ to the final ‘It is a far far better thing that I do than I have ever done’, Dickens’ classic novel of the French revolution tells a story of the redemptive powers of love in the face of cruelty, violence and neglect.

Exciting narration for an Excellent Classic
This is my first time through the classic, A Tale of Two Cities. Since Dickens experimented with his writing style, I found the narration, by Julian Rhind-Tutt, helpful in keeping me motivated and moving forward.
What a wonderful story. Brutal in its depiction of the Reign of Terror, Dickens juxtaposes the kindness of a few with the wild ferocity of the mob. It is compelling to say the least.
I cannot say enough about the performance. Outstanding and worth the listen.

Breathtaking
Dickens can portray beautiful and horrible in words, in a way that seems impossible. To me he’s the Mozart of language. The reader of this audio book did justice to the words that took my breath away!

It's good, but I just can't
We all know that Charles Dickens is one of the Greats. A Tale of Two Cities is a classic. The narration was great. So I'm taking responsibility for the fact that I can't listen to these kinds of works anymore, The plot is slow to develop, and it's necessary. The angst...I just can't do that. There is enough drama in my life without angst. So, if you can put yourself in the mindset of a period when authors were paid by the word, you will love it. It is truly a great work.

Intimate Peek into the Revolution
The only other Dickens I was familiar with was A Christmas Carol. Likewise with that novella, I went in bracing myself for a chore of literature that I felt obligated to expose myself to and just as with A Christmas Carol I came out a devout fan of the book and the beautiful way that Dickens writes.
I was entirely ignorant of the plot and mostly ignorant of the cultural events it surrounds itself on, but never felt lost or struggled to push through. Each chapter I was enchanted and awaiting the next stage in our characters' story.
There was a very short adjustment period for the language used, but that was quickly overcome and I was able to settle into the 18th century and visualize the society on the brink of collapse.
The performance itself is well done. Clear and articulate well paced reading, with no weird audio issues throughout the entire runtime.
Note that this version includes an hour long introduction/analysis (to be listened to after completing the plot) to complete your experience.
