Resumen del Editor

In a land torn apart by conflict, can love mend the tattered pieces?

As 1754 is drawing to a close, tensions between the French and the British on Canada’s Acadian shore are reaching a fever pitch. Seamstress Sylvie Galant and her family—French-speaking Acadians wishing to remain neutral—are caught in the middle, their land positioned between two forts flying rival flags. Amid preparations for the celebration of Noël, the talk is of unrest, coming war, and William Blackburn, the British Army Ranger raising havoc across North America’s borderlands.

As summer takes hold in 1755 and British ships appear on the horizon, Sylvie encounters Blackburn, who warns her of the coming invasion. Rather than participate in the forced removal of the Acadians from their land, he resigns his commission. But that cannot save Sylvie or her kin.

Relocated on a ramshackle ship to Virginia, Sylvie struggles to pick up the pieces of her life. When her path crosses once more with William’s, they must work through the complex tangle of their shared, shattered past to navigate the present and forge an enduring future.

Excellent history lesson

Loved the beautiful writing style, history of Acadia, Williamsburg and the sad but true story of the Acadians.

Love it!

Laura Frantz is an auto buy author for me. I love her books. Their are lush and complex in plot and her characters are memorable and well written. She is dedicated to historical detail which is important to me in historical fiction.

The Seamstress of Arcadie is beautifully written and was set during a time in history I didn’t know a lot about except for Longfellow’s poem. I didn’t want it to end. Another excellent book by this author!

The audio book narration was excellent as well.

Overall a great book

Laura Frantz is one of my favorite authors! This wasn’t my favorite books she’s done but I enjoyed it. I did not care for the narrator, she was very monotone at times making it hard to focus. I had to keep rewinding parts because I didn’t understand what was even happening.

A love of three strands

I loved everything about this book. Especially the way she weaves our Lord’s hand through the lives of the characters. Laura Frantz teaches with her story telling and in doing so leads us closer to God. Truly amazing.

interesting characters. Will is one of my favorite leading men.

the story has a slow begging but hang in there ots worth it and the back story is needed to support the rest of the story. All together a wonderful read of trials and tragedy that are overcome through time and love.

Strong Characters

I loved all the characters, learning about Acadian history, and the sweet love story. It was a little slow in the middle.

Dragged out and far-fetched

Perhaps the experience would have been different had I read the paperback version, as I was pretty annoyed with the narration. It was VERY slow and the narrator got some of the French names wrong (French is a stress-final language). She distinguished between Major Blackburn's voice and that of Sylvie, but other than that all the voices were largely the same.

The story captured the plight of the Acadians well and I appreciated the historical detail. But that was the only strong point of the novel, in my opinion.

The characters mostly felt flat and the story was slow-paced and rather predictable. What also jarred me are some aspects regarding language in this novel. First is the fact that Sylvie knew English because her great-grandmother had been Scottish. This is highly unlikely. Ususally a language which is not spoken in the territory in which a family lives is lost (unfortunatelly) within two generations. Furthermore, the English spoken by her Scottish great-grandmother would have been quite different from the Englsih spoken in Virginia. Sylvie's transition to Virginia English should have taken at least a bit of an effort. Secondly it is impossible that after only a year of living side by side with the French, the major could have learned to speak French not only without mistakes, but with an almost undetectable accent. In this case also, the French he would have learned from the soldiers would have been different from the one spoken by Sylvie in Acadie. So, at their first meeting she should have immidiately realized that he was not a native speaker and deffinitely not from around Acadie. These are two aspects which make this story pretty far-fetched.
