    Each episode is a quest to uncover the silenced, overlooked and unappreciated voices of black activists and heroes. From the life story of Mary Ann Shadd, unacknowledged Sleeping Car Porters and a powerful tale of A. Philip Randolph, echoes of injustice and whispers of triumph are recognized at last.

    Welcome back to this episode of “Our Untold Past”, in today’s episode, we will explore the crucial roles played by Jamaican Maroons and the sleeping car porters in shaping Canada’s history.

    Discover the journey of Jamaican Maroons, who fled slavery in Jamaica and sought freedom on Canadian soil. Learn about their survival skills, their establishment of independent communities, and their significant role in the abolitionist movement.

    We’ll also delve into the lives of sleeping car porters, many of them being Black citizens, who were essential in the history of the railway system. Despite facing long hours, low pay, and minimal respect, even through all of that, they maintained a high level of professionalism and dedication to their duties.

    Also tune in to learn about A. Philip Randolph, a tireless advocate for justice, equality, and workers’ rights. His leadership of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters led to the significant improvements in wages and working conditions, becoming a role model for young generations, if they know his story.     In this episode, discover how Mary Ann Shadd and her family faced continued segregation and discrimination, making her more dedicated to the cause of uplifting all Black Americans. Tune in to learn about the significant events that changed lives of many, including laws that banned Black children from going to school to a newspaper of important recognition that was left unrecognized.

    Let’s discover what a life of a Black woman, who juggled roles as a journalist, publisher, teacher, and a lawyer had to face. This story is full of hurdles, discrimination, sexism and much more. We hope you follow along on this journey, as we delve into the depths of our untold pasts, shedding light on the stories that shaped us and continue to inspire us today.
