The course begins with the fundamentals, introducing you to the essential elements of the Latvian language such as greetings, numbers and answers to questions. The curriculum centers on common words and phrases that are most beneficial for beginners, ensuring accessibility and immediate practicality. As you advance, you will master key vocabulary and simple sentence structures, learning how to greet people, express basic needs, and make simple requests. This is consistent with the CEFR A1 (beginner) level of language expertise.
With a strong focus on practical application rather than extensive grammar rules, this course is perfect if you're eager to quickly develop the ability to converse in Latvian. Each lesson builds on the previous, gradually expanding your ability to communicate in real-life situations. By the end of this course, you will have a solid grasp of basic Latvian.
Latvian, one of the two surviving Baltic languages along with Lithuanian, has an important history reflecting the cultural and political shifts in the Baltics over centuries. The origins of Latvian can be traced back to the Baltic tribes that inhabited the eastern shores of the Baltic Sea. Over time, these tribes developed a distinct language, which has evolved into what is known today as Latvian.
Today, Latvian is the sole official language of Latvia and is spoken by about 1.75 million people in Latvia and beyond.
