Resumen del Editor

A selection of some of Colette’s finest works dramatized.

Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, known as Colette, was a French author and woman of letters. She was also a mime, actress, and journalist. Colette is best known in the English-speaking world for her 1944 novella Gigi, which was the basis for the 1958 film and the 1973 stage production of the same name. Gigi became a celebrated stage musical and film; the stage production made a star of Audrey Hepburn, who was personally chosen by Colette for the role, and a dramatized adaptation is the centrepiece of this collection.

Collette’s first four books were the chronicles of fictional French schoolgirl Claudine and included in this collection is the first of the series: Claudine at School. This dramatized adaptation tells a scandalous tale of female friendship, a coming of age novel with erotic over tones.

In this collection we also have an adaptation of Cheri, another tale with a wonderful female lead telling Colette's tale of a love affair between a Parisian courtesan and a man half her age, set in Paris, 1912, and The Vagabond which was inspired by Collette’s own experiences and tells the story of a woman, Renée Néré, who after a divorce becomes a dancer in music halls. Finally, we have a reading of Sido, which was a series of novels about Colette’s mother.

Also included in this collection is an In Our Time episode discussing Colette and her work and influences.
