  • Resumen

  • The old grandfather clock struck midnight as Detective Lila Payne arrived at the Blackwood Manor. The frantic call from the family butler had been brief but urgent. Amelia Blackwood, the sole heir to the Blackwood fortune, was dead.

Lila stepped into the study, where the body lay sprawled on the antique Persian rug. Amelia's lifeless eyes stared at the ceiling, her throat slit from ear to ear. The room was in disarray, with books strewn about and a shattered vase near the fireplace.

The family gathered in the room: Amelia's estranged husband, Marcus; her sister, Evelyn; and her nephew, James. The butler, Mr. Hughes, stood by the door, his face pale and drawn.

Lila examined the scene, noting the blood-stained letter opener on the desk. She questioned each family member, learning of the tensions and resentments that had plagued the Blackwoods for years.

Marcus admitted to arguing with Amelia earlier that evening over their impending divorce. Evelyn revealed that she had always been jealous of her sister's wealth and success. James, a struggling artist, confessed that Amelia had threatened to cut him off financially.

But it was the butler's statement that caught Lila's attention. "I saw a hooded figure fleeing the study just before I discovered the body," Mr. Hughes said, his voice trembling.

Lila's instincts told her that the killer was still in the room. She looked at each suspect in turn, her mind racing. Then, she noticed a small detail that had escaped her earlier.

"Evelyn," Lila said calmly, "you're wearing a different pair of shoes than you were when I first arrived."

Evelyn's face paled. "I... I changed them earlier," she stammered.

"No, you didn't," Lila replied. "You changed them because your original shoes were stained with Amelia's blood. You killed your sister, thinking you could frame the butler by having him discover the body. But you made one fatal mistake."

Lila pointed to the shattered vase. "The killer knocked over that vase during the struggle with Amelia. The shards of ceramic are embedded in the soles of your discarded shoes, Evelyn. You're the murderer."

As the police led Evelyn away, Lila couldn't help but feel a twinge of sadness. Another family torn apart by greed and jealousy, another mystery solved. It was just another night in the life of Detective Lila Payne.
