From Feelings to Facts: Romancing Your Business Numbers for Success

  • Resumen

  • Here in Thailand, we are waking up in the tropical heat… which is a number you can feel. Many female business owners make the mistake of feeling their numbers. This episode is all about guiding you through how to shift from feels to knows when it comes to the scoreboard in your business. With a side of romance to keep it interesting.

Sarah has left not just the building but the whole country and is coming to you from an island in Thailand. No, it didn’t magically happen. It’s a full circle moment back to where Jonny and I met that came out of the deliberate processes we use in our business and life.

    Location Freedom: Living the Dream

Seven years ago, Jonny and I decided we wanted more than just financial freedom—we wanted the ability to work from anywhere. After a lot of planning and a few detours (thanks, 2020), we’re finally doing it. We renovated our house, listed it on Airbnb, and now we’re in Thailand, embracing homeschooling, unschooling, and world schooling for Scarlett.

    Business as Usual—But Better

Despite the move, our business keeps running smoothly. I’m still here for my clients, recording podcasts and planning in-person events when we’re back in New Zealand. Jonny’s managing the cruises with an onboard and onshore team handling the day-to-day, giving us the freedom we’ve always wanted.

    Embracing Change and Overcoming Challenges

This journey hasn’t been easy. From Scarlett adjusting to a suitcase life to saying goodbye to my Gran, we’ve faced our fair share of challenges. These experiences reminded us that significant changes always come with obstacles, but they’re worth it.

    Key Learnings from Our Journey

    1. Embrace the Obstacles: Challenges will always pop up. They test your commitment to your goals.
    2. Exercise for Mental Health: My mental health is closely tied to physical activity. Even during chaos, find time to move. It’s crucial.
    3. Create a Productive Environment: Your workspace matters. Make sure it’s set up to help you stay productive and separate work from personal life.

The Importance of Knowing Your Numbers

You can’t “feel” your numbers—they’re facts. Understanding them is essential for your business success.

    1. Use a Framework: We recommend Profit First for its clear, structured approach. It helps you see exactly what’s going on with your money.
    2. Know Your Costs: Understand direct costs (what each unit costs to make) and indirect costs (expenses you have regardless of sales). This clarity helps in setting the right prices and boosting profitability.
    3. Review Regularly: Regularly check your numbers and make small adjustments. Incremental changes can significantly improve your bottom line.

    Action Steps:

    1. Read Profit First: Get a copy of Mike Michalowicz’s book or Profit First for Tradies by Katie Criswell Marshall if you’re in New Zealand or Australia. It’s a must-read.
    2. Ask Questions: Find a trusted advisor who can explain your numbers in plain English. No question is too dumb—understanding is key.
    3. Romance Your Numbers: Make reviewing your numbers a habit. Create a comfortable environment, get your favourite coffee and treat, and dive into your financials regularly.
