Twelve-year-old Snipe survives by the street, having studied the skills of the pickpocket from his father. That is, until that fateful day the police take his father away when he’s caught in the act. It leaves poor Snipe to fend for himself until his grandfather finds him, and together they work as pure-finders to get by.

It's exhausting, dirty work, but it provides food for them both. Yet circumstances soon force his hand once more, and Snipe finds himself working as a rat catcher, another less-glamourous job, but one that not only pays more, but can lead to opportunities that eventually may set Snipe free, and surprisingly, in more ways than one.

Mac McTacvish and his daughter Maggie are forced from their home in Scotland after painful years of toil and hardship. Circumstances compel them to begin life anew elsewhere, whatever the cost.

Eventually, a chance meeting between Maggie and Snipe plants the seeds of something more, in both of them. Inexperienced in love, but determined to seek the other, both long to meet up again, no matter how much time may pass.

Growing up surrounded by drudgery, a constant hunger, and the lack of hope for a brighter future, two distant souls may just find what they seek, if only they know where to look.
