Bheedtantra, a collection of short stories by the noted Hindi novelist and playwright Asghar Wajahat, exhorts to its listeners: What is preferable, democracy or mobocracy? Decide!
Asghar Wajahat is probably the sole writer of Hindi who can fuse satire, ridicule, and compassion together in the story with assured nonchalance. Sadat Hasan Manto is considered to be a magician of this craft in Urdu, but in Hindi it is undoubtedly Asghar Wajahat. He is the one of the rare ones who sees today’s democracy this way.
The stories of this magnificent collection manage to put a mirror in front of us, in which country-world, home-away, satire-ridicule, dark-light, all are stringed together in a severe indictment of Indian seven-decade-old democracy.
Bheedtantra, with its sharp wit and satire, manages to create a deep affinity with listeners, which will stay with them for a long time to come. Through these stories the writer manages to stir listeners from their blissful slumber. It is a must-listen book for every Indian.
