Inspired by her research for the hit podcast Ultra, Rachel Maddow charts the rise of a wild American strain of authoritarianism that has been alive on the far-right edge of our politics for the better part of a century. Before and even after our troops had begun fighting abroad in World War II, a clandestine network flooded the country with disinformation aimed at sapping the strength of the U.S. war effort and persuading Americans that our natural alliance was with the Axis, not against it.

The New York Times Magazine’s award-winning “1619 Project” issue reframed our understanding of American history by placing slavery and its continuing legacy at the center of our national narrative. This new book substantially expands on that work, weaving together 18 essays that explore the legacy of slavery in present-day America with 36 poems and works of fiction that illuminate key moments of oppression, struggle, and resistance.

Historia
Americans tend to cast slavery as a pre-modern institution - the nation's original sin, perhaps, but isolated in time and divorced from America's later success. But to do so robs the millions who suffered in bondage of their full legacy. As historian Edward E. Baptist reveals in The Half Has Never Been Told, the expansion of slavery in the first eight decades after American independence drove the evolution and modernization of the United States.

For more than three centuries, slave ships carried millions of people from the coasts of Africa across the Atlantic to the New World. Much is known of the slave trade and the American plantation complex, but little of the ships that made it all possible. In The Slave Ship, award-winning historian Marcus Rediker draws on 30 years of research in maritime archives to create an unprecedented history of these vessels and the human drama acted out on their rolling decks.

Historia
Harriet Jacobs’ autobiography, written under the pseudonym Linda Brent, details her experiences as a slave in North Carolina, her escape to freedom in the north, and her ensuing struggles to free her children. The narrative was partly serialized in the New York Tribune, but was discontinued because Jacobs’ depictions of the sexual abuse of female slaves were considered too shocking. It was published in book form in 1861.

In 1927, Zora Neale Hurston went to Plateau, Alabama, just outside Mobile, to interview 86-year-old Cudjo Lewis. Of the millions of men, women, and children transported from Africa to America as slaves, Cudjo was then the only person alive to tell the story of this integral part of the nation's history. Hurston was there to record Cudjo's firsthand account of the raid that led to his capture and bondage 50 years after the Atlantic slave trade was outlawed in the United States. In 1931, Hurston returned to Plateau, the African-centric community three miles from Mobile.

Overall, Tulsa in 1921 was considered a modern, vibrant city. What had fueled this remarkable growth was oil, specifically the discovery of the Glenn Pool oil field in 1905. Within five years, Tulsa had grown from a rural crossroads town in the former Indian Territory into a boom town with more than 10,000 citizens, and as word spread of the fortunes that could be made in Tulsa, people of all races poured into the city.

The Roman gladiator has long been a figure of fascination. Portrayed frequently in fine art and popular culture alike, the gladiator is both a real part of history and a legend of a romanticized past. We know that these men entertained Roman audiences by fighting in dangerous and often deadly games. But who were the gladiators? What were their lives like? And why do they continue to have such a strong hold on our imagination, centuries after the fall of the Roman Empire?

Historia
Christmas is the single biggest annual event on the planet, a time for merry-making, over-indulgence, peace, goodwill, and the occasional family row. It’s as comfortable and familiar as a pair of old shoes and yet still glittery and exciting. But what do you really know about it? It’s stuffed full of traditions and rituals that most of us have been observing all our lives without having the slightest idea of where they come from.

Historia
The history of the tablets translated in the following book is strange and beyond the belief of modern scientists. Their antiquity is stupendous, dating back some 36,000 years. The writer is Thoth, an Atlantean Priest-King, who founded a colony in ancient Egypt after the sinking of the mother country. He was the builder of the Great Pyramid of Giza, erroneously attributed to Cheops. In it he incorporated his knowledge of the ancient wisdom and also securely secreted records and instruments of ancient Atlantis.

The best comprehensive book I have read on slavery.
No doubt slavery was wrong in every form. I wish every black and white student would be required to read this book. It is not a slant to protect whites or blacks. It paints a picture of this evil, it perpetrators both black and white. Simple things like most blacks were captured by fellow black tribesmen and sold to the European slave ships. Only 6% of slaves came to America and the lasting evil is blacks do not get the same education white kids do. We have come a long way but much more to do. I highly recommend this book.

Exhaustive history and context
I've been woefully undereducated about the history of slavery. It's our responsibility to know the real story, and this book does an incredibly good job of giving the history, the context, the facts and figures, and the ripple effects that are still very much present today. Well-organized and well-produced also. Recommend!

Tragic history revealed
Unravel the truth behind slavery. Being African American this is a topic that has always enraged me. But it is a small part of our history, and books like this unveil the evil truths. I’m saddened that this book had to be written.

My Heritage And Blackness ....
... has spawned a growing nasty tradition of white supremacy fostered and perpetrated by the likes of William Lynch, Thomas Jefferson, and George Wallace among countless others. They have raised the expectations of white people of endless supremacy much to their demise. This book clearly outlines what the slave trade fostered: A horrible legacy we must crush now and forever! Read or listen - The truth will set you free! Richard J. (Houston, TX)

Shocking but notice-worthy history
I feel sorrowful for these unfortunate people, and I'm so grateful that I live an okay life listening to this audiobook without suppression but not being a slave. Many people were slaves from their childhoods. That's so sad! This significant history should be passed on so that more and more people nowadays won't do cruel things like this to others. Highly recommended.

So interesting!
If you're into history or somehow into unknown or untold informations, then this is a good book to listen. I find it so shocking to know the deep story of this slavery. It's so unfortunate to those people who suffered slavery while some of them are enjoying their life. Lots of interesting facts you will know in this book. A worthy one!

learning new history.
a lot of history has been scraped from all aspects of the public's eyes. this book dives into forgotten topics and the research shows how much detail was listed. narrator was a little blah for me. but that is my own preference. good book to broaden your history lessons
