A Brain Opener

With a year of EMDR therapy I’m excited that my therapist does BrainSpotting as well. Throughout the book I could tell I personally look in certain ways and it brought up more information about my growth. If you were looking for self growth this is an excellent book to get into

Clinically useful - great for therapists

Grand's contribution is quite remarkable, and I respect the academic openness and humility he exhibits in this book. I have used brainspotting in therapy alongside various methods that employ somatics and interoception, and this book not only gives a great recounting of how Grand developed the techniques, but gives great case studies and distinctions that can be immediately brought into the consultation room. I promptly began enjoying enhanced responses in my own life and in my work with psychotherapy clients in both group and individual settings.

I greatly appreciated Grand's respectful critique of the protocolized, technique driven approaches, including EMDR, and found that quite validating. His methods involve a balance between attunement and technique that is often underappreciated - depriving many clients of the results that can be achieved by it.

Along with this book, I read his article written with Dr. Corrigan, which has expanded my understanding of both brainspotting and how to leverage the mid brain orienting response more directly in therapy. I can endorse Brainspotting as a highly useful method that can bring elegant results for highly-attuned therapists.

I didn’t know what Brainspotting was! Now I am an informed client. Brainspotting is an informative read in layman’s language. I highly recommend it.

Excellent technique and glad I listened

I am an individual using this on my own and love it. I'm experimenting, as the author suggests, with other modalities where I experienced interesting effects with eye movements and didn't understand why. Now I'm more intentional and loving this. I may also reach out to a practitioner who is in my area.

Andrew Huberman of the Huberman Lab podcast discusses how the eyes are an extension of the brain and the only external part of the brain outside the skull. It makes complete sense to me that eye movements could stimulate areas of the brain and release trauma or other undesirable patterns. NLP also discusses the power of eye patterns to reveal inner workings of the brain. So, this is fascinating in addition to the relationship to EMDR.

Although I agree with other reviewers that this is not a specific how-to book, one can certainly glean enough to experiment, and dare I say benefit, if you're steeped in other healing modalities and self aware. I wish other reviewers were not as harsh in their criticism of the self congratulatory nature of the book.

This unfortunate tone is something a good editor should have caught. If you can let it go and stay focused, it's an amazing read and technique. I also love the author's relentless focus on evolution of the technique, sharing it, collaborating, learning, and keeping an ultimate eye on the ball of the patient or user results. That is extremely rare with any healing modality or intervention.

I take off one star only because of the unfortunate lack of editing to fix the self congratulatory tone. Otherwise, this is great and I highly recommend it for anyone looking for potentially highly effective ways to evolve or heal in less time.
