Few books in history have been as poorly understood as the Qur'an. In this audiobook, the distinguished historian of religion Bruce Lawrence shows precisely how the Qur'an is Islam. He describes the origins of the faith and assesses its influence on today's societies and politics. Above all, he emphasizes that the Qur'an is a sacred book of signs that has no single message. It is a book that demands interpretation and one that can be properly understood only through its history.

Focusing especially on Christianity but including Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Chinese spiritualities, Armstrong examines the diminished impulse toward religion in our own time, when a significant number of people either want nothing to do with God or question the efficacy of faith. Why has God become unbelievable?

Since the beginning of time, humankind has looked upon nature and seen the divine. In the writings of the great thinkers across religions, the natural world inspires everything from fear, to awe, to tranquil contemplation; God, or however one defined the sublime, was present in everything. Yet today, even as we admire a tree or take in a striking landscape, we rarely see nature as sacred.

No less than his art, Lynch's life also evades simple categorization, encompassing pursuits as a musician, painter, photographer, carpenter, entrepreneur, and vocal proponent of Transcendental Meditation.

For the first time, religious self-identification is on the decline in American. Some analysts have cited as cause a post-9/11 perception: that faith in general is a source of aggression, intolerance, and divisiveness - something bad for society. But how accurate is that view? With deep learning and sympathetic understanding, Karen Armstrong sets out to discover the truth about religion and violence in each of the world’s great traditions, taking us on an astonishing journey from prehistoric times to the present.

In this timely and important audiobook, one of the most trusted and admired writers on the world of faith examines the meaning of Scripture. The sacred texts have been co-opted by fundamentalists, who insist that they must be taken literally, and by others who interpret Scripture to bolster their own prejudices. These texts are seen to prescribe ethical norms and codes of behavior that are divinely ordained: They are believed to contain eternal truths. But as Karen Armstrong shows, such a narrow, peculiar reading of Scripture is a relatively recent, modern phenomenon.

Venerated for millennia by three faiths, torn by irreconcilable conflict, conquered, rebuilt, and mourned for again and again, Jerusalem is a sacred city whose very sacredness has engendered terrible tragedy. In this fascinating volume, Karen Armstrong, author of the highly praised A History of God, traces the history of how Jews, Christians, and Muslims have all laid claim to Jerusalem as their holy place, and how three radically different concepts of holiness have shaped and scarred the city for thousands of years.

Drawn directly from 24 Pali, Sanskrit, and Chinese sources, and retold by Thich Nhat Hanh in his inimitably beautiful style, this book traces the Buddha's life slowly and gently over the course of 80 years, partly through the eyes of Svasti, the buffalo boy, and partly through the eyes of the Buddha himself. The ancient Toltecs believed that life, as we perceive it, is a dream. We each live in our own personal dream, and these come together to form the dream of the planet, or the world in which we live. Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

Just before Christmas in 1843, a debt-ridden and dispirited Charles Dickens wrote a small book he hoped would keep his creditors at bay. His publisher turned it down, so Dickens used what little money he had to put out A Christmas Carol himself. He worried it might be the end of his career as a novelist. The book immediately caused a sensation. And it breathed new life into a holiday that had fallen into disfavor, undermined by lingering Puritanism and the cold modernity of the Industrial Revolution.

Historia
Moving from the Paleolithic age to the present, Karen Armstrong details the great lengths to which humankind has gone in order to experience a sacred reality that it called by many names, such as God, Brahman, Nirvana, Allah, or Dao.

The Words of My Perfect Teacher is the classic commentary on the preliminary practices of the Longchen Nyingtig—one of the best-known cycles of teachings and a spiritual treasure of the Nyingmapa school—the oldest Tibetan Buddhist tradition. His style of mixing broad colloquialisms, stringent irony, and poetry has all the life and atmosphere of an oral teaching.

Karen Armstrong is exeptional
As a lifetime Buddhist, I am impressed by the accuracy of this rendition of the life of Buddha.. It's obvious that a great deal research was done by the author. She is thorough without overwhelming us with detail and her use of the English language is masterful.

Good Introduction to the subject
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
I found the details of Buddha's early life to be the most interesting part of the story. I found the ending to be the least interesting because once his philosophy was established some of the nuances were confusing.
What does Kate Reading bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
She has a pleasant voice and says all the Asian names accurately, as far I know anyway
Did Buddha inspire you to do anything?
It inspired me to read another book about Buddha

I found this to be a very academic look at the life of the Buddha. It was interesting to a point but I don't think those of us who are interested in the spirituality of Buddhism will find chronilogical review of his life very satisfying.

My favorite book on Buddhism!
I play this book all the time in the background - it is so positive and thoughtful it just makes me happy 😊! If you know this author at all, you know your IQ goes up just reading any Karen Armstrong Book.
My favorite Favorite Buddhist story is discussed. How cool is it that when Buddha needed a witness for his status he touched the ground and told Mara (devil) "the earth testifies for me."
Whenever your out in nature touch something and say this and you will feel that blissfull place...I sure do!

Buddha (Unabridged)
Karen Armstrong's book Buddha is a treasure for anyone interested in learning about the Buddha from simultaneously a historic, an anthropologic, a philosophic, a spiritual, and an esoteric perspective. The book's unfolding traces an easy to follow spiritual and esoteric contextual time-line that covers the human condition from known history. Karen Armstrong narrates and explains a very plausible version of the Buddha's life and demonstrates a sensible mastery of the Buddhist Teachings. I remain grateful that her book was made available in audio format. I will buy the printed version as a companion to the audio format. I was also absolutely delighted with Kate Redding's reading of this book. Ms. Redding has captured the spirit of this book in her reading. I'm looking forward to listen to and then read Karen Armstrong's other books. Too bad that Ms. Redding isn't reading her other books. Ms. Armstrong and Ms. Redding thank you so much for touching my soul and mind in my quest for spirituality.

Learned So Much
I always love learning about different religions, and this book did not disappoint. I learned so much about Buddhism that I never knew, that goes beyond the stories, and more into the scraps of history that might be telling us a deeper story.
I highly recommend this book.

Disappointed
The content is good. The book as a historical is probably a good read. The speaking manners of the narrator...with clipped or stilted way of talking is annoying. She pronounces the Indian words very carefully with an even more exaggerated stitled manner. Mentioning the Indian translation of the words is fine, but then to go back and use them later, with no visual reference is expecting a lot from this listener. I can't remember what a foreign word means 20 minutes of narrative later...especially when I haven't seen the word in written form. So I missed many of the meanings ascribed to the words later.
