Great traditional approach / short read

I like and agree with how this author explains spankings for children.
Also, this author does a wonderful job of reminding us how important psychology and sociology are in the role of development.
I also like how the traditional role of males and females are addressed, and the importance of keeping these roles defined.

too religious

there are many good hints and remarks but there is way too much about Christian upbringing and mixing of psychology with religion. Not recommending unless you dont mind that

Essential

A wonderful preparation for raising any child. I didn’t want the book to end. It is full of richness and encouragement to any parent.

More of an opinion piece - outdated

As a physician I was hoping for something more scientific. The vast majority of this text is opinion of Christianity and description of confidence in white females. The United States has changed significantly over the past 40 years and so should our outlook. The data reviewed are relatively poor examples of psychological studies. Overall concepts Still apply.

Homophobic, anti-feminist, pro-Christian

I couldn’t recommend this book to anyone. There’s maybe one useful chapter in the entire book, but otherwise, it’s repetitive. And more disturbing, it’s homophobic, anti-feminist, and way too pro-Christian. I’m okay with a little religious teaching, but not to the discredit of other teachings and philosophies.

Zero stars

This book is dated and offensive. The author is quick to judge others and talk himself up. This book should come with a warning that it is for a Christian audience. I found his patriarchal and religious opinions offensive. He says "The root cause of all suffering is sin" What a perverted thing to say! I want a refund!

Disappointed

Was really disappointed with his explanation of homosexuality, the explanation discredits the rest of the book. Not sure if the rest of the book is science based or religious based. I'm a Catholic person but still understand there are some things that need to be explained correctly.

Looks elsewhere for positve parenting advice

While I do agree with the general view of today's society being overfocused on looks (girls) and athletic ability (boys), I lost my patience with this book when Dobson prescribed spanking and cuddling afterwards. THERE IS NEVER ANY REASON TO STRIKE A CHILD OF ANY AGE. EVER. The only lesson violence teaches a child under 8 is that its OK to hit people you love.
Try the Strength Switch by Lea Waters. Focusing on your childs strengths is an organic way to build confidence.

Outdated Terms/Assumptions- I'm disappointed

First, I'm a follower of Christ and seek His will for my life and my children.
I found that the book was dated and, at times, offensive in Dr. Dobson's terminology, for example the use of the word "retarded" to describe mental and learning disabilities. I am a Christian Educator and no one should use such an offensive term. I was shocked that a learned man would continue to use the word to grossly over simplify a wide range of disabilities. It was about this chapter that I stopped, prayed a blessing over Dr. Dobson and his ministry, and moved on.
I believe there are some good, practical truths but I personally couldn't get past some of the antiquated (not in a good way) generalizations and terms. I did not finish the book.
