She’s desperate to stop the panic attacks. But the truth won’t set her free....
Jamie Kendal sees life through the bottom of a bottle. After surviving assault and betrayal, she hopes to dull the pain by returning to her hometown to care for her mother. Instead, she’s plagued by terrifying slivers of memories from the night her twin brother disappeared forever....
Unearthing new evidence, she’s shocked to learn she’d been found wandering in the woods that same night—drenched in blood. The deeper she digs into the horrors from her past, the more she fears almost anyone could be the murderer.
Can Jamie expose a killer on the loose or will she join her brother six-feet under?

Now reduced to a schoolyard chant, the Hope family murders shocked the Maine coast one bloody night in 1929. While most people assume seventeen-year-old Lenora was responsible, the police were never able to prove it. Other than her denial after the killings, she has never spoken publicly about that night, nor has she set foot outside Hope’s End, the cliffside mansion where the massacre occurred.

It was supposed to be a fun weekend at our family cabin. I was going to surprise my husband, Mike, with a small get-together for his 40th birthday. Something is wrong, though. Mike isn’t himself lately. He goes out often and by himself, leaving me and our young son. Our happy marriage is fading away, and I don’t know why. This weekend is just what's needed to cheer him up. It’s what we need for us. When I get to the cabin and set up, I hear sounds coming from the basement. That’s when I see her. A young woman tied up and scared.

Buried in My Past
I came across this not too long ago and realized that I had already read the third installment in the series, Last Known Location. At the time I read it, I thought it was a standalone. Even now, it’s not listed on GR as Cedar Lake #3, it’s listed as just Cedar Lake, like maybe it’s the first installment. I hate it when that happens. Anyway, because I really liked the third installment (sooo good), as well as being a fanatic about reading a series in order, I am now going back to read the first two installments. It might actually not a be a big deal that I read them out of order because the series doesn’t seem to be focused on a particular individual, or even a group or team of people, but rather around a place – Cedar Lake. It looks like every installment has different people in it. – sort of.
Anyway, the book summary introduces the primary storyline of Jamie who suffers from nightmares and panic attacks, and who goes back home after her estranged mother is injured and ends up in a coma. What the book summary doesn’t mention are the other MC’s: Drew, Brick and Taylor. Drew was also in the third installment that I read, which makes sense because he’s a Cedar Lake cop. Like Jamie, Drew grew up in Cedar Lake and the two of them have some “history” from back then. Brick is a mentally challenged man, who was secretly living in Jamie’s mother’s basement, unbeknownst to even Lillian (Jamie’s mother) until the day she was injured. Taylor, which the reader is told from the get-go is not his real name, likes to drive hours away from home to other towns to meet women in bars that he catfished online. He proceeds to roofie them and goes back to their place to rape them. Apparently, “Taylor” actually lives in Cedar Lake.
The story flips back and forth between Jamie and the other characters as well as back and forth between present-day and 18yrs ago at summer camp where it was that Jamie’s twin brother, Trevor, disappeared and Jamie was found in the woods covered in blood from a wound that starts on her cheek and extends down to her chest. Based on my previous experience with MacKenzie and her writing style in the third installment, my armchair detective immediately starts anticipating possible scenarios and suspects. That’s probably not fair to MacKenzie but based on how she totally caught me off guard in the third installment, I was determined for that not to happen again.
Well into the second half, the storylines begin to merge and it’s a scary and intense ending that had me worried for some of the characters. Well, MacKenzie did it again – sort of. While I wasn’t totally caught off guard and blown away like I was in Last Known Location, and did suspect one person pretty early and in the end was correct, there were still some crazy revelations that I did not figure out that made the story that much crazier and scarier.
The character development was pretty well done for most of the MC’s. I would have liked to have had a little more info on a couple of other characters, but I’m sure that was by design. The pacing was steady to fast and the storyline was interesting. Having read two installments now, I can say that MacKenzie’s writing was on par for the series. I’m looking at an overall rating of a solid four for a 4star review. On to the next installment. It looks like this ended up just being a trilogy, which may explain that crazy ending in the third installment. If so, MacKenzie ended it with a bang!
