Acerca de esta escucha

Debut novelist Wayne Caldwell's Cataloochee -a rich, vivid, arresting work beginning at the dawn of Reconstruction - sprawls across the succeeding generations like the vast green mountains of its rural North Carolina setting. Best-selling author Charles Frazier calls it "a brilliant portrait of a community and a way of life long gone, a lost America." This enthralling saga evokes the full color spectrum of mountain life, from lights to darks and every shade in between.©2007 Owlhead, Inc. Reseñas de la Crítica

"A...diverting collection of tangential yarns, Caldwell's debut will find a spot on many readers' shelves near Charles Frazier's Thirteen Moons." ( Publishers Weekly)

Great Historical Fiction

This book really added perspective to my recent trip to the Smoky Mtns of NC and Tenn. The story itself was entertaining and fairly well written, but to me the greatest value in this book is the true to life story it tells of life in the mountains in the time before the land was taken for the Smoky Mountains National Park. A 'must read' before visiting Cataloochee Valley and/or Cades Cove.

Love It!

I have listened to this book twice now. One of my all time favorites. I have been to Cataloochee and am familiar with its history. This book and excellent narrator brought the magical place to life for me. I will listen again, and drive the 1700 miles to Cataloochee again. This book will make my trip there even more meaningful.

Cataloochee

This was an excellent, well written book. Our Book Club delighted in the freshness and clarity of the land and the simplistic, complicated and hard life of the characters. Ethics for the most part were good. This led to a very good discussion.

Must read for anyone who loves the Smokies

Vividly painted picture of life of Smoky Mountain settlers around the time before it became a National Park. Really enjoyed the story, woven from true to life vignettes. I’ll read this again.

Confusing

The cast of characters in this book is so wide and muddy that it's difficult to keep track of them, and there's no continuity in the lives of any of them. Being Appalachian, I love the sound of the talk, but the women, especially, are portrayed as slightly short of feeble minded. The narrator puts in a good effort, but some of the lines he has to deliver are simply not believable, and he has a tendency to whine. I cannot recommend this one.
