The compositions of Wasim Barelvi, an exponent of Moradabadi School of poetry, appeal to the classes and masses alike. Charag is a compilation of these works. Known for his deft handling of easy and everyday language, the poetry of Wasim wins the hearts of all. It also shows Wasim Barelvi’s engagement with contemporary times and its issues. His poems do not just dwell in any imaginary world, but contemporary problems and events form an integral part of his repertoire, which makes his works more relevant.
Wasim Barelvi is from Moradabad, which was a prominent seat of arts and literature. He did his MA in Urdu from Agra University in 1958 and soon found employment as a lecturer at Hindu College of Dehli University. During this time he started going to mushairas. After retiring from the post of Dean in June 2000, Waseem Barelvi devoted himself completely to poetry. He has received numerous awards and accolades in his times: the Hindi-Urdu Sahitya Award, the Kaifi Azmi Adbi Award, the Firaq International Award, etc. His works have been published to critical acclaim and commercial success in both India and Pakistan.
