Parfois des scènes de la vie de tous les jours ou des faits divers, de petits tableaux saisis dans le vif où s’agitent des personnages ordinaires ou extraordinaires, tendres ou sordides, mesquins ou généreux, cruels ou malheureux, victimes ou bourreaux... Parricides, ivrognes, enfants pervers, maris aveugles, ravissantes idiotes, bourgeois lâches et mesquins, paysans cruels et cupides...
Même les paysages qui accueillent ces courts récits sont baignés de ce contraste. Il y a parfois la lumière berçant le paysage, qui n’est toutefois pas la même lorsqu’il s’agit du Pays de Caux ou bien d’Ajaccio. La mer pareillement, celle de la Manche ou de la Méditerranée, n’a pas les mêmes reflets ici ou là. Et puis parfois la lumière se retire comme une vague, laissant le paysage plongé dans les ténèbres. Même la nature a dans ces contes une manière de vous séduire puis de vous abandonner à votre propre sort.
