Il 2 giugno del 1793 la Convenzione, da tre giorni in seduta permanente nelle Tuileries, già reggia dei sovrani di Francia, tenta di rompere l'assedio delle sezioni sanculotte parigine ma viene respinta dal popolo in armi. Poco dopo, i ventidue deputati girondini, considerati nemici dalla Comune, vengono espulsi dalla fazione giacobina e arrestati.
È un passaggio drammatico e decisivo della Rivoluzione francese, oggetto di interpretazioni storiche diverse e che richiama alla memoria altri episodi decisivi, come lo scioglimento nel 1918 da parte di Lenin della Costituente russa appena eletta. Quel 2 giugno del 1793, ben prima della caduta di Robespierre o del colpo di Stato del Bonaparte, ha inizio la crisi della Rivoluzione.
