Acerca de esta escucha
Stuart Vyse, PhD, is the author of Believing in Magic: The Psychology of Superstition, which received the William James Book Award of the American Psychological Association. A celebrated psychologist and professor as well as a recognized author, he is the perfect guide for this audio series on the power of superstition.
This wide-ranging course reveals the method to our madness in everything from finances to Friday the 13th. An expert on irrational behavior, Prof. Vyse discusses what it means to be rational before delving into the many reasoning errors and psychological challenges that lead us astray.
In 15 lectures, you will learn to identify the logical fallacies and quirks of our psychology that tempt us to make unwise decisions. While the course is based in theory, it’s also teeming with practical advice.
You’ll examine several popular conspiracy theories before exploring the remarkable staying power of common “bad luck” superstitions: How did these superstitions come to be? Is it always bad to be irrational? At what point do our beliefs veer into the territory of wishful thinking or willful ignorance?
Packed with fun examples and everyday pointers, this course leaves you thinking long and hard about how you think. With Prof. Vyse’s guidance, you’ll learn to better understand your beliefs and make better decisions.
This course is part of the Learn25 collection.

The four Gospels are foundational to Christianity. Yet Christian readers are often puzzled by the differences between the Gospels, preferring to harmonize the four into a single narrative. Now, this 24-part lecture course invites you to understand each Gospel's distinctive message. Along the way, you will examine theories about how the three Synoptic Gospels are related. You will also learn why the evangelists are symbolized by four living creatures: the man or angel, the lion, the ox, and the eagle.

Historia
Beginning in the third century AD, pious men and women journeyed into the Egyptian desert, where they sought to be "alone with God alone." Known as the Desert Fathers and Mothers, they pursued lives of solitude and prayer in order to make offerings of themselves to God. They acquired great insight into the spiritual life, which has been passed down to us in the Sayings of the Desert Fathers. Now, you can discover the fascinating lives and works of such awe-inspiring figures as St. Antony the Great and St. Mary of Egypt.

A Great Course to Improve Your Thinking
Well, I believe in some irrational things. I do not like black cats and I have bad luck with number 13; I know they are superstitions but I still feel worried about them anyway.
While listening to this course, I realized that I have done and believed in many of the irrational things Dr. Stuart discussed. I believed in some conspiracy theories and some superstitions. I did not use critical thinking when I should have done and I was wrong in some situations when I insisted that I am 100% right.
After listening to this course, I will start making decisions better. However, I am a simple man and my problems are as simple as me. This course is more than this. If you need help with your finances, this course is for you. The course includes chapters discussing only financial matters.
Dr. Stuart is a well-known psychologist explaining why people believe in superstitions and how to make financial decisions. When I searched about him, I knew for sure that this course will change me forever.
I will try my best to follow what I have learned in this course and I am sure my decision-making skills are already improved.
Thank you, Dr. Stuart, for this fascinating course!
