Franz von Kobell's Kurzgeschichte vom Brandner Kaspar, veröffentlicht 1871 in den Fliegenden Blättern, ist ein Klassiker bairischer Erzählkunst und Sprache. Mehrere Dramatiker haben den Stoff für die Bühne bearbeitet, am erfolgreichsten Kobell's Großneffe Kurt Wilhelm mit Der Brandner Kaspar und das ewig' Leben. 1975 uraufgeführt, brach das Stück bald alle Hausrekorde des Bayerischen Staatsschauspiels und steht noch heute auf dem Spielplan. Über 100 Bühnen haben es nachgespielt, es erschien als Roman und Hörspiel und wurde in fünf Fernsehfassungen dutzendmal gesendet.
Kaum ein Volksstück begeistert das Publikum so sehr wie Der Brandner Kaspar und das ewig' Leben von Kurt Wilhelm. Es ist ein Kultstück geworden. Nie zuvor blieb eine Inszenierung 35 Jahre bis zum heutigen Tag auf dem Spielplan eines Staatstheaters und erreichte nahezu 900 stets ausverkaufte Aufführungen in Folge wie im Bayerischen Staatsschauspiel in München sowie weit über 1500 in ganz Süddeutschland, in Österreich und der Schweiz und wurde zudem als Hör-, Fernsehspiel und als Roman verarbeitet.
Viele Zuschauer wollen es immer wieder sehen, manche gar über zehnmal (der Rekord steht bei 50!). Alte Menschen sagen, sie fänden darin eine Art Jenseits-Verheißung voller Trost und Hoffnung. Junge, die es gesehen haben, als sie noch klein waren, führen nun ihre eigenen Kinder hinein. Und die Theater freuen sich über volle Häuser.
