In this sequel to The Anaconda, A New Earth, and A War of Myths, crew members from an asteroid mining ship that mysteriously traveled 400 years into the past continue to pursue their private missions - a global war of liberation for slaves and native peoples, two 23rd-century capitalists seeking to control the Ottoman Empire, and an effort to protect civilization’s greatest treasures in a museum hidden away on a South Pacific island.
The war against imperialism peaks in 1802 with battles at Saint Louis and New Orleans as the united Plains tribes easily defeat British, French, and Spanish forces. Two independent factions continue to be a fly in the ointment - twin assassins who laugh at generals and monarchs, and a former fusion furnace engineer who has become the mythical Bird Woman.
Up in geostationary orbit, the ship’s auditor struggles to untangle an all-powerful artificial intelligence from the quantum consciousnesses of two comatose crew members. Meanwhile, east of the Big Muddy River, President Jefferson and his new nation make plans to fight or flee.
