Acerca de esta escucha

When you first walk into a room in a house, or into a stable, they have a way of telling you they know you're there. It ain't nothing particular noticeable, but the air inside of âem changes like it's saying, "I'm watching you". But I'd got into this stable so quiet and sneakish that nothing knowed I'd cracked open the door, held my breath, and took a step inside. Then I heard a humming sound so near that my blanged legs and breathing frozed up all over again. Whatever it was that was making that sound was so close that even my eyeballs locked where they were at. Then I started sliding my eyes off to the left. Someone had leaned some dark bundles or sacks up âgainst the left hand side of the stable. There were five of âem. The noise commenced again, sounding like someone fishing âround trying to figure which song they were âbout to hum.It was one of the bundles! It had four live, moving arms! I couldn't believe I'd come all they way to the United States of America to see my first haint!©2007 Christopher Paul Curtis (P)2008 Random House, Inc. Literatura y Ficción Inspirador Sincero

Great book/narration; terrible chapter labeling

The story itself is phenomenal and the narration is perfect. My only issue is with how the chapters are labeled vs. the actual chapters. For example, the audio that is labeled as Chapter 1 encompasses from Chapter 1 in the book to the middle of Chapter 3. The audio that is labeled Chapter 2 encompasses from the middle of Chapter 3 in the book to the end of Chapter 6. I use audiobooks for my students with disabilities who need audio support. This labeling makes it very difficult for them.

How is this so good.

It was amazing. All I think it needs is a huge bowl of popcorn and a movie about it.

Great story - great narration - a win - win

I read Elijah of Buxton last year and just adored the story and history of Buxton. I was very pleased when we found the audio version - the narrator is very animated and entertaining.

I loved this book

I never finished reading g the book so when I found the audible version I was extremely excited. I finished it in 2 days.

I love the story. I teared up quite often listening to the story. I feel so lucky I was not born back in those days. I often think of the slaves that were born and died as a slave. never seeing a day of freedom. Their whole life they were mistreated and that's all they knew. All of this just because of the color of their skin. it just doesn't make since.

Excellent audible book.

Great Book, but not for young children

The message of this story is very good and it is very well written. I love the language or voice that this book brings. Like a few of the recent Newberry Award Winners, there are a few themes that are not appropriate for younger audiences. There is talk about people breeding, and graphic descriptions of slaves naked in chains. I think that it is important that people come to understand the inhumanity of slavery, and this book is a fantastic book to address this issue. Although this is a horrific tragedy, the book also focuses on the triumphs and joys of freedom. It is a fantastic book for middle and high school audiences.

Excellent book

Christopher Paul Curtis is one of America's best writers for children, and adults. His books are fascinating, extremely well-written, historically accurate, and move past what people consider "children's books" into "universal literature." I find his perspectives on difficult topics like slavery and the life-experiences of black Americans (and Canadians) to be illuminating. And yet often his books are fun, funny, and poignant, sometimes at the same time. I look forward to reading and listening to each book - Elijah of Buxton has become a favorite. It introduced me to the town of Buxton and the free-slave settlement there, with characters that are complex and unique.

Six thumbs up from 6 Listeners!

What made the experience of listening to Elijah of Buxton the most enjoyable?

The family listened to this audiobook together every evening and on a road trip. The children thoroughly enjoyed it. No one wanted to miss a second of it.

What did you like best about this story?

This is a great book already. The kids loved Elijah with his fragile disposition and also enjoyed the fact that this historical fiction is based on a true settlement that we could find on a map and learn about online.

Mirron Willis did a wonderful job of reading this book. The kids listen to it again and again.

Have you listened to any of Mirron Willis’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No
