Samuel is the last of the judges, and with his end approaching the people demand a king “so we can be like all the other nations.” As God tells Samuel, “it is not you they have rejected, they have rejected me as their king.” And indeed they have. The people choose a king, Saul of the tribe of Benjamin. Saul will rule Israel for an entire generation, but although he looks like a king, he does not have the heart of a king, and the weight of kingship crushes him.

It also explains the origin of Purim to the Jewish people. Thematically, this book confirms God's sovereignty and his resulting ability to save his children. Dr. Bill Creasy's analysis of this text includes quotations, historical background, and modern analogies. His lecture is accessible but in-depth. With confident delivery and skilled pacing, Dr. Creasy proves to be an exceptional lecturer. Meanwhile, he doesn't mind getting his hands dirty with the nitty-gritty of Esther's story. Thanks to Dr. Creasy's friendly tone, this talk is quite charming.

A Wonderful Bible Study.

Esther is an index to Biblical times
Get your notebooks out from the beginning. Dr Creasy really helped me with dates of kings, the sacking & rebuilding and by whom, of Jerusalem and the king knives names. Listening Esther that era to help me understand how it fit together.

Best Bible Study
I often look to Dr Creasy's Bible studies to dig into geopolitical, linguistic, historical and cultural meanings that are lacking in other studies. This helps me ground my exegesis in its broad context. One example of Dr Creasy's exegesis is the pivotal verse 5:4 in which he explains the first letter of the Hebrew words spell "YHWH", a subtle acknowledgement of God's presence in the shadows of the story. But a less well-explained is his interpretation of 1:11 of "wearing *only* the royal crown". I have heard this interpretation before, but don't see that the text supports it. If it's more obvious in the Hebrew, it needs to be highlighted. Overall however, I appreciate the details and explanations offered by Dr Creasy.

Great lecture series!
This is another great lecture series from Dr. Bill Creasy. He is always incredibly insightful and engaging. He often supplements the material with personal stories which are relevant and interesting. He has taken several trips to Israel and the Middle East where he visits the locations depicted in the Bible and he shares those first hand accounts which enables him to take you back to that point in time that the scripture is talking about.
