Acerca de esta escucha

Astronomy-loving Calliope June has Tourette's syndrome, so she sometimes makes faces or noises that she doesn't mean to make. When she and her mother move yet again, she tries to hide her TS. But it isn't long before the kids at her new school realize she's different. Only Calliope's neighbor, who is also the popular student body president, sees her as she truly is - an interesting person and a good friend. But is he brave enough to take their friendship public?

As Calliope navigates school, she must also face her mother's new relationship and the fact that they might be moving - again - just as she starts to make friends and finally accept her differences.

Ellie Terry's affecting debut will speak to a wide audience about being true to oneself.

So cute

This book was a gift from my old fourth-grade teacher. I never got up to reading it because reading was not my favorite thing at the time. Reading has always been hard for me; the words just started to jumble. After seeing it sit on my bookshelf for year's I tried to read it. I was surprised to see how bite-sized each page was and loved the format. I loved the book and thought that it made a good picture of understanding people who are different and accepting them for who they are.

VERY disappointing

The book’s length is 2:45, and about 2:30 of it is listening to an amazingly resilient 13 year old girl with Tourette Syndrome cope with being mocked & harassed every single school day by her peers, and then spending her evenings with an egocentric, callous mom whose primary concern is finding a husband and who’s annoyed by her daughter’s tics. The one friend she supposedly has shuns her when in public, so calling him a friend is a bit of a stretch.

As a mental health professional, I was extremely disappointed with the storyline and, for anyone who has Tourette’s, it’d probably be borderline traumatic since the takeaway is that, if you’re diagnosed with TS, you’ll be treated like crap.

Don’t be fooled by the flowery, lighthearted cover, or think that the focus will be whether or not a friendship survives one person moving away - everything about the cover is misleading.
