While it may seem like he is ahead of the game and should have nothing to worry about, he is still plagued by anxieties - fear of being weak; fear of being a bad dad; fear of being a worse husband; and, ultimately, fear of failure. A few years ago, Kris Carr’s world was falling apart. Her father was dying, she had to pivot her business because of the pandemic, and she was on the verge of reaching her twenty-year milestone of living with an incurable Stage IV cancer diagnosis. While sitting in a CVS parking lot, she broke down, finally allowing herself to feel the massive stress and sadness she had been suppressing in order to seem strong for those around her, and for herself. And then she asked herself, “If embracing my intense emotions helped me feel even the slightest bit better, why was I so determined to avoid them?"

What does it mean to be an adult? In the 20th century, psychologists came up with five markers of adulthood: finish your education, get a job, leave home, marry, and have children. Since then, every generation has been held to those same markers. Yet so much has changed about the world and living in it since that sequence was formulated. All of those markers are choices, and they’re all valid, but any one person’s choices along those lines do not make them more or less an adult.

Insightful and Inspiring
I really enjoyed this quick listen. The stories in this book are important for people to share, so people don’t feel as if they are alone in their struggles and accomplishments. The narration by Shelby Anderson was wonderful. Her voice exuded comfort in otherwise heartbreaking stories. To have a book written with such tough circumstances that have been overcome by different women, it was a nice balance to listen to these stories from someone with a soft and warm tone, almost inviting me to listen more. I enjoyed quite a bit. Thanks for shedding light on these important issues from a woman’s perspective.
