I Bråthested har stormanden Regnar sammen med kæresten Blia og munken Anselm besluttet sig for at tage til Hestenæs (Horsens), efter at ransmænd har ødelagt Bråthested (Hadsund). Da de ankommer til byen, der er kendt for sine hedenske hestekampe og ofringer, ser de en kvinde, der slæbes rundt i et bur.
Alle håner hende og spytter på hende. Hun har bedrevet hor og skal brændes. Det siger loven, og høvedsmanden, Kløs Molrik håndhæver loven strengt, ligesom han holder både byen og sin hustru Pigold i stramme tøjler. Munken Anselm bryder sig ikke om tonen i Hestenæs; Anselm prædiker Hvide Krists ord om kærlighed og tilgivelse, men Regnar vil gå mere håndfast til værks og rense ud...
Under urolighederne, der opstår, ser Anselm sit snit til at brænde byens gamle gudehov af og befri kvinden i buret. Alt er forvirring og tumult, da Sven Estridsøn kommer til byen. Da bryder solen frem, og for en stund synes freden at være genoprettet i Hestenæs...
