Church Terrell (Casaundra Freeman) on the challenges of living as a Black woman in the nation's Capitol, Theodore Roosevelt's (Ted Koch) astonishing speech from a 1912 campaign stop, which he delivered moments after being shot by an assassin and the closing remarks from the Defendants in the Sacco and Vanzetti murder trials (Christopher Tiffany and Paul Stroili, with Lawrence Theis as the judge).
This collection of powerful and moving speeches pays tribute to these great orators and to the words they used to inspire millions.

David Walker, the son of an enslaved man and a free black woman, was an entrepreneur, abolitionist, author and anti-slavery activist. In 1829, he published An Appeal to the Coloured Citizens of the World, a radical call for black solidarity and resistance to slavery. It raised awareness of the abuses of slavery, encouraged pride in its black readers and offered hope that change would eventually come. Being a radical anti-slavery document, it caused a stir upon publication, as it called upon readers to take an active role in fighting their oppression, regardless of the risk.

This pamphlet, first published in 1776, set in print the word every American was thinking about, but none dared say: independence! It was published anonymously in New York, selling 120,000 copies in the first 3 months and half a million in that same year. Its author, Thomas Paine, wrote in a language that could be understood by any reasonably literate colonist. But more important than it being so well received, is that it captured the American colonists' imaginations and was a primary catalyst to the independence movement in the United States. Noted American historian Bernard Bailyn called it "the most brilliant pamphlet written during the American Revolution, and one of the most brilliant ever written in the English language."
