In campo San Giacomo, a Venezia, c’è la Moby Dick, una libreria di quelle “che ti sorprende che esistano ancora, anche se ci sono in ogni città, tenaci come guerrigliere, eleganti come principesse.” Il suo libraio si chiama Vittorio, ha passato i quarant’anni, vive per i suoi libri, combatte per continuare a venderli. Un giorno incontra Sofia, gli occhi chiari e le risposte svelte, che prende l’abitudine di andare a trovarlo.
Il 12 novembre 2019, però, i 187 centimetri di acqua alta eccezionale inondano le case, i negozi, sommergono gli scaffali di Vittorio. Le pagine annegano, e “campo San Giacomo è pieno di libri perduti, e pare che tutto sia perduto”.
Giovanni Montanaro, che ha vissuto in prima persona i giorni tragici dell’inondazione, li racconta in un modo lontano dalle cronache che hanno commosso il mondo. Racconta l’angoscia dell’acqua che sale, che distrugge, ma mostra anche un’altra Venezia, i giovani, i cittadini che reagiscono, l’allegria nata in mezzo allo sfacelo, fatta della capacità di aiutarsi, di rinascere.
Scritto quasi di getto, questo splendido racconto è una galleria di personaggi, emozioni, colpi di scena il cui cuore è Venezia, sono i librai, è l’amore per i libri e l’amore che nasce grazie ai libri. E ai librai veneziani Montanaro destina interamente i proventi dei suoi diritti d’autore, per sostenerli dopo gli eventi di novembre.
In calce al volume, sono proprio i librai veneziani a descrivere sé stessi e le loro librerie: il lettore può scoprirli anche attraverso le mappe che creano un percorso nella laguna – nonostante tutto, “Venezia è sempre lei. Venezia è meravigliosa”.
