Uncover a fascinating glimpse into WWI on the Mesopotamian front.
Few people truly know about Iraq’s role in World War One. The stage of a desperate struggle against the Ottomans, the story of brave men who lived and served in this harsh landscape is often overshadowed by the battles in Europe and North Africa.
But now, this memoir explores the life and duty of Frank Wooten, an American, serving as a British officer in the Mesopotamian Motor Machine Gun Corps. Told with gripping detail and offering profound insights into the lesser-known and often-overlooked Middle Eastern theater, this book provides a unique perspective of the war to end all wars.
Recounting Frank’s daily life on the front, his duties throughout the war, and the incredible people he met along the way, Journey into Eden is a fascinating book, perfect for anyone interested in the lesser-known stories of World War One, the history of the Iraq War, and the nature of life on the front.

The First World War was four long years of slaughter, exhaustion, and the near-collapse of a civilization that until 1914 had dominated the globe. Instead of rote memorization of endless facts, figures, names, and places, why not show what happened from those that were there in the trenches, skies, and on the seas? What did they see, hear, and feel?

As German tanks rolled toward Paris in late May 1940, the US Ambassador to France, William Bullitt, was determined to stay put, holed up in the Chateau St. Firmin in Chantilly, his country residence. Bullitt told the president that he would neither evacuate the embassy nor his chateau. As German forces closed in on the French capital, Bullitt wrote the president, "In case I should get blown up before I see you again, I want you to know that it has been marvelous to work for you."

Growing up on a farm in Ohio, George always preferred being outdoors and exploring. This made school a challenge, but his hunting, fishing, and trapping skills helped put food on his family's table. As a poor teenager living in a rough area, he got into regular brawls, and he found holding down a job hard because of his wanderlust. After working out West with the CCC, he decided that joining the Marines offered him the opportunity for adventure plus three square meals a day; so he and his brother joined the Corps in 1941.

Historia
In World War II, 59,000 women voluntarily risked their lives for their country as US Army nurses. For more than half a century these women's experiences remained untold, almost without reference in books, historical societies, or military archives. After years of research and hundreds of hours of interviews, Evelyn M. Monahan and Rosemary Neidel-Greenlee have created a dramatic narrative that at last brings to light the critical role that women played throughout the war.

When Daniel Guiet was a child and his family moved country, as they frequently did, his father had one possession, a tin bread box, that always made the trip. Daniel was admonished never to touch the box, but one day he couldn't resist. What he found astonished him: a .45 automatic and five full clips; three slim knives; a length of wire with a wooden handle at each end; thin pieces of paper with random numbers on them; several passports with his father's photograph, each bearing a different name.

Historia
When Daniel Guiet was a child and his family moved country, as they frequently did, his father had one possession, a tin bread box, that always made the trip. Daniel was admonished never to touch the box, but one day he couldn't resist. What he found astonished him: a .45 automatic and five full clips; three slim knives; a length of wire with a wooden handle at each end; thin pieces of paper with random numbers on them; several passports with his father's photograph, each bearing a different name.

Fall, 1944. Paris has been liberated, saved from destruction, but this diversion on the road to Berlin has given the Germans time to regroup. The American and British armies press on from the west, facing the enemy time and again in the Hurtgen Forest, during the Market-Garden invasion, and at the Battle of the Bulge, all while American general George Patton and British field marshal Bernard Montgomery vie for supremacy as the Allies’ top battlefield commander.

June 1942. The shadow of the Third Reich has fallen across the European continent. In desperation, Winston Churchill and his chief of staff form an unusual plan: a new commando unit made up of Jewish refugees who have escaped to Britain. The resulting volunteers are a motley group of intellectuals, artists, and athletes, most from Germany and Austria. Many have been interned as enemy aliens and have lost their families, their homes - their whole worlds. They will stop at nothing to defeat the Nazis.

One of the last cavalry units to ride horses into battle, the Sherwood Rangers were transformed into a “mechanized cavalry” of tanks in 1942. After winning acclaim in the North African campaign, they spearheaded one of the D-Day landings in Normandy and became the first British troops to cross into Germany. Their courage, skill, and tenacity contributed mightily to the surrender of Germany in 1945.

Richard Freiherr von Rosen was a highly decorated Wehrmacht soldier and outstanding panzer commander. Later he led a company of King Tiger panzers at Normandy and in late 1944 commanded a battle group (12 King Tigers and a flak company) against the Russians in Hungary in the rank of junior, later senior lieutenant (from November 1944, his final rank). The Brandenburgers were Hitler's Special Forces, a band of mainly foreign German nationals who used disguise and fluency in other languages to complete daring missions into enemy territory. Overshadowed by stories of their Allied equivalents, their history has largely been ignored. First published in 1984, de Giampietro's highly-personal and eloquent memoir is a vivid account of his experiences. In astonishing detail, he delves into the reality of life in the unit from everyday concerns and politics to training and involvement in Brandenburg missions.

Very interesting, personal book
This is the second book I have read/listened to by War History Journals and I would listen to another. In fact, I have Mission to Ireland next in my queue. I have not completed the book yet, but I’m thoroughly enjoying it. There is a lot of information. Frank’s recollection of the events, peoples and sights are quite detailed. ——-
This is the first book I have listened to by this narrator ( Gary Williams ) and I would gladly listen to another. His voice is very pleasant to listen to and he has comfortable pacing. His level of expression is appropriate for this material.——-
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and voluntarily left this unbiased review.

A different perspective
This book was a fresh look at WW1 through the eyes of one out in the field not from the rear. It is a pity that it ended as it did, but it was prevalent in the aftermath of the war. I enjoyed this book.

It's still a war torn area
historical-figures, historical-places-events, memoir, middle-east-politics, ww1
Listening to the officer's journal would have been infinitely better if the narrator knew the hill of crucifixion (Calvary) from an Army mounted division (Cavalry).
The journal is something of a travelogue and history of the areas in which he served and the varied armies serving as allies with the British troops this American served with. It was very interesting to recognize the places we know from wars eighty years later as well as distant history. The notable people like Gertrude Bell and T. E. Lawrence were favorably and personally remembered, and the maps of the day sounded a lot like our current trials with Google Maps. I totally enjoyed the information!

Tremendous Story
What I liked the most about this book was the coverage of a lesser series of battles. I knew there was fighting their by the local tribes with the Germans mixed up in it. The WW I German probably put their lessor command structures there - to get experience for the next war. The whole time the fighting went on, it seems the "fog of war" was 2-3 times thicker than most of the fighting in Europe had. I highly recommend this book. Now for the obligatory: I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review.

Interesting but not compellingly written
well interesting, the book had a hard time holding my interest. it seems like the author glazed over what I would have thought would have been very important aspects of his experience and then went into detail on things that were not so interesting.
