Janet Lake Casuals is the most profitable line of high-end women's fashion offerings produced by New York's Close Apparel. When the line's talented designer, who also happens to be the brother of the its namesake, the internationally famous model and actress, Janet Lake, is found bludgeoned to death in the company's corporate offices, Detective Joe Dante is assigned to lead a task force charged with bringing the murderer to justice. But shortly after the investigation gets underway, it becomes clear to Dante and his partner that too much of the evidence in the case contradicts itself. A devious puppet-master with a taste for extreme violence seems to be pulling invisible strings behind the scene, but who, to what end, and why? In typical Christopher Newman fashion, the narrative moves with breath-taking swiftness through a complex labyrinth of false leads and double-dealing before reaching yet another of his take-no-prisoners climaxes.
