Hochschild y sus investigadores asociados entrevistaron a cincuenta parejas y observaron una docena de hogares a lo largo de las décadas de 1970 y 1980, para explorar la brecha de ocio entre hombres y mujeres. La investigación demostró que las mujeres aún se hacen cargo de la mayoría de las responsabilidades del hogar y del cuidado de los niños a pesar de su ingreso en la fuerza laboral. Esta "doble jornada" afectaba a las parejas, provocando sentimientos de culpa, tensión marital, falta de interés sexual y sueño.
Por otro lado, Hochschild difundió las historias de algunos hombres que compartieron por igual la carga del trabajo doméstico y el cuidado de los niños con sus esposas, demostrando que si bien es poco común, es una realidad para algunas parejas. La investigación presentaba además una clara división entre las preferencias ideológicas de los géneros y las clases sociales. Sumando el tiempo en el trabajo remunerado, el cuidado de los niños y las tareas del hogar, descubrió que las madres trabajadoras dedican un mes de trabajo al año más que sus cónyuges.
