Des camps de la mort au débarquement de Normandie, de l'occupation de Paris aux viles anonymes dans lesquelles les épouses essaient de se fondre en vue de protéger leur famille ou encore des rues de Québec aux villages de Charlevoix, la cruelle réalité de la vie en temps de guerre se déploie. Avec une douloureuse acuité, L'amour au temps d'une guerre nous invite dans le cœur de ces gens admirables à qui on souhaite le salut. Mais bien que la fin du conflit permette des retrouvailles bouleversantes pour quelques élus, elle dénombrera également beaucoup trop de vies perdues ou brisées. Même si la guerre est terminée, la vie tarde à reprendre son cours. Tandis que les survivants peinent à guérir leur âme écorchée, les disparus, eux, laissent des traces indélébiles et des cœurs brisés.
En Europe, la famille Nicolas trime dur pour faire renaître le verger tandis que Jacob veille à bâtir un avenir pour ses deux filles à Paris où, jadis, ils vivaient tous heureux avec Bertha. Brigitte, quant à elle, tente de surmonter la disparition de son beau Canadien auprès de Madame Foucault et de la petite Éva tandis que Gilberte, au Québec, se dévoue à aider son bon ami Ernest à surmonter la perte de son fils.
