Back in action

Old soldiers never die...except inside, when they lack a reason to live. Old soldier Wes Stauer is dying inside, from sheer lack of purpose.

And then comes the knock on the door: ''Our leader's son and heir has been kidnapped. We don't know where he is. We need you to get him back for us. The people who have him are numerous, warlike, and well-armed. But money is no object.''

And then old soldiers - sailors and airmen, too - stop fading away and come back into sharp focus.

a very detailed and amazing story

Col Kratman presents us with an in-depth storyline. Although I believe that the casualty rate would have been higher there are enough to make it seem somewhat realistic. The tactical situations are very detailed. I read everything that he has written. I look forward to hearing more stories from him. If you are reading this review and debating whether to buy it then I have to make this point. If you're a left wing socialist type don't. unless you are open minded, but how many left wing socialist types are open minded.

Tom Kratman writes a compelling fantasy

Retired Col. Tom Kratman has a unique ability. He can write about military planning and logistics, and make it as interesting as a battle scene. Most military novels skip over these parts, because it's just not interesting, or not written to be. But Kratman weaves his characters' development in with these aspects of battle preparation, and answers the question on everyone's mind: just where does one buy APCs?

Kratman does this in his Patrick Carrera series also. If one cannot afford 5th generation fighters, and the vulnerable airfields they need, what to do? Why, fill the skies with refurbished MiG-15s, bought on the cheap, and hide them and their new jet assisted take off launchers in the jungle!

Countdown is the first book in a new series for Kratman, and one can tell that there are more stories to come. The narration is crisp and unobtrusive. There's even a bit of romance. If you like military sci-fi, you'll like this book.

Classic Kratman

If you can suspend disbelief a little bit to allow for an entire combat team to be created by a private individual then you'll enjoy the book.

It's not Clancey or the guy who write under the Clancey banner these days but it's a decent listen and the lenght is nice
