Resumen del Editor

For centuries, the world of Safehold, last redoubt of the human race, lay under the unchallenged rule of the Church of God Awaiting. The Church permitted nothing new - no new inventions, no new understandings of the world.

What no one knew was that the Church was an elaborate fraud - a high-tech system established by a rebel faction of Safehold’s founders, meant to keep humanity hidden from the powerful alien race that had destroyed old Earth. Then awoke Merlyn Athrawes, cybernetic avatar of a warrior a thousand years dead, felled in the war in which Earth was lost.

Monk, warrior, counselor to princes and kings, Merlyn has one purpose: to restart the history of the too-long-hidden human race.

And now the fight is thoroughly underway. The island empire of Charis has declared its independence from the Church, and with Merlyn’s help has vaulted forward into a new age of steam-powered efficiency. Fending off the wounded Church, Charis has drawn more and more of the countries of Safehold to the cause of independence and self-determination. But at a heavy cost in bloodshed and loss - a cost felt by nobody more keenly that Merlyn Athrawes.

The wounded Church is regrouping. Its armies and resources are vast. The fight for humanity’s future isn’t over, and won’t be over soon…

awesome performance

oliver wyman is one of the best voice actors, who really knows what he's doing. the storyline and characters are really well introduced and performed as it should be, not like in books 6,5,4 & 3!

Great Page Turner

Plenty of action of military situations. Also enjoyed the narrator much better than earlier books

awesome

Oliver Wyman is my favorite reader for this series....his vocal range is extensive, and his characterizations bring the characters to life for me.

Great saga

Like a Mighty Army continues the war between the Empire of Charis and the Church of God Awaiting. Thankfully, this recording has Oliver Wyman. The one complaint I have about this series is the constant changing of narrators. All in all, this is the next step in the war. I know some folks have said it's too drawn out and there's too much detail, but that's actually what I enjoy about the series.

Oliver Wyman makes the perfect narrator!

Would you consider the audio edition of Like a Mighty Army to be better than the print version?

This is a long book. Having a narrator that you want to listen to is essential if you want to finish it. As a commuter, print books are not high on my list. However, a good David Weber book with a good narrator always is.

What does Oliver Wyman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Oliver Wyman brings the characters to life. His use of different voices allows the listener to better "see" the book in person. It also helps that he adjust his voice to match what you think the character actually looks like. I hope David Weber keeps him for all future Safehold books. Switching narrators can really ruin an otherwise great book.

Any additional comments?

This is a very good book. However the Safehold series in and of itself is rather slow moving forward. It would be nice to see the pace pick up somewhat. I have listened to all of the Safehold and Honor Harrington books. I look forward to each and every one that comes out in the future!

Better

Any additional comments?

Could somebody convince Weber or MacMillian to re-do books 5 and 6 with Oliver Wyman. When reading those books; the spelling of names and places is so strange you can't sound them out. When listening to them, the pronunciation was so bad you didn't know who was talking about what. Now that they're back with Wyman, the continuity, and the series is shot.

Awesome!

Awesome, I repeat ... the military land battles are incredible as are, of course, the sea battles. The continued intrigue into the lives of Safeholdians who are affected by the war stills the heart and makes you, the reader, feel compassion for everyone. This is a MUST read for All who are fans of the Safehold Series.

A Whole Lotta Shaking Going On!

I love the series, being as this is about my fourth time listening to it. There is however, a lot of tedious parts to it as the author/characters do a lot of explaining of how this or that technological advancement works, or the changing social economics of Safehold is shaping up. The funniest part of the series is how many times a character will "give themselves a shake" either mentally or actually physically. "Caleb gave himself a shake", "Charliann gave herself a shake", "General Eastshare gave himself a shake". You could almost, no, you could make a drinking game out of how many times you hear that a character shook themselves out of a thought pattern or musings making it along the line of The Bob Newhart Show "Hi Bob" game. Seriously I do really like the series but as I had to do, you'll have to overcome some quirkiness in the story.

Much better than the previous book

This book is much better than the last one. I have not heard this narrator before and I am going to go back now and listen to the first few books in the series just because I enjoyed the narrator so much even though I have read all of Webber's work so far.. Much like Christian Rummell does his books, Oliver makes this book a joy to listen too.
