Sabel, la criada de perversa belleza y que ha dado un hijo bastardo al marqués, es la figura opuesta a Nucha. Emilia Pardo-Bazán (La Coruña, 16 de septiembre de 1851), condesa de Bazán, fue una autora noble, novelista, periodista, feminista, ensayista, poetisa, dramaturga, traductora y catedrática española. Introdujo el naturalismo en España como corriente literaria. Fue precursora con sus ideas de los derechos para las mujeres y el feminismo.

Traumatized by the bombing of Dresden at the time he had been imprisoned, Pilgrim drifts through all events and history, sometimes deeply implicated, sometimes a witness. He is surrounded by Vonnegut's usual large cast of continuing characters (notably here the hack science fiction writer Kilgore Trout and the alien Tralfamadorians, who oversee his life and remind him constantly that there is no causation, no order, no motive to existence).
