Upon closer inspection, Mattie and Detective Steve Hurley are convinced Jack was murdered to steal his winnings, giving the phrase Black Jack a whole new meaning....
But as Mattie investigates, even her cutting-edge forensic skills keep coming up short in a case with as many suspects as twists. After her odds-on-favorite turns up dead, Mattie and Hurley must race to find a killer before another victim cashes in his chips.

Read ALL of them!
I want more differences in voice but other than that, I've read all the Maddie series and highly recommend them. Good mysteries, flirtatious and comedic banter. Give them a listen.

Annoyingly predictable
I was so disappointed in this installment. The whole “will they/wont they” thing takes up like half the book. I get having SOME as it’s an aspect of the story but at every turn you learn that something silly is about to happen to throw everything off. Once in a story is fine but it happened MULTIPLE times in just this book. If you’ve ever watched Castle, you can predict exactly what’s going to happen. Every decision she finally makes is overturned you pretty much know by the end that if she says she’s going to do something the opposite will happen. I will say the way the people died is unique but that’s about it.

I really dislike her
I had to skip to the end of book to write this! How can one person be so self absorbed as this protagonist. She’s nosey, intrusive, rude, a thief and acts if she is above the law. Then she thinks she has the virtue to act has the heroine. Typical liberal America….. save the dogs and cats but to hell with her own integrity. Regret the time I lost reading part of this book.
