Acerca de esta escucha

Lucy Sullivan is 26 and living it up (and occasionally down) in London.

Hers is a life of quiet, undisciplined desperation. But when she and three friends visit a psychic for a bit of fun and the woman's predictions start coming true, Lucy is horrified. For the fortune-teller insisted she'd soon be married - within the year, in fact. Not only does Lucy not have a boyfriend, but the chances of getting one are looking slim.

Between the bottles of wine, antidepressants and her addiction to self-help books, she's not quite ready to walk, or even stumble, down the aisle sober. Is Lucy's fate really written in the stars? Or will she finally take control of her own destiny?

Brilliant Book, Well Narrated

As a longtime, die-hard fan of Marian Keyes, listening to her books as opposed to reading is always a bit anxiety-inducing at first. Although others have criticized the narrator, I thought she did an excellent job, with one exception. She is very talented with accents, producing flawless London (Cockney-ish), Scottish, Irish, Welsh, Yorkshire and even German! The only place she falls down is with Daniel. The character of Daniel, whilst being gentlemanly and kind, is also meant to be cool, saavy, good looking with a good job... and she makes him sound like a bumbling, goofy, uneducated half-wit - not Daniel at all - especially if you have read the book prior to listening. However, overall a very good performance.

Sweet story

I enjoyed the story, as I do all of Marian Keyes books. I didn’t like the narrator’s “men’s voices”, they all sounded annoyingly dumb.

Amazing performance!

Amy McAllister’s ability to perform accents so well and to switch between them so breezily is amazing! Story is good but imagine it wouldn’t read as well as you can listen to it.

Excellent performance but dated story

I definitely enjoyed the listen, the narrator was very good at juggling a large cast of characters. The story was very characteristic of the 1990s, with strong Bridget Jones vibes (originally published the same year). This is very much Chick Lit, which is a genre that has disappeared. It was good to see Lucy grow and mature and there are things about the story that appreciated that I might not have when I was younger. The story has some dated aspects with things like fat-shaming that wasn’t great. But, it is of its time, and if read as an artifact of the 1990s it is interesting. I’m glad I listened to it, since I missed it back in the 1990s.

Great story that builds over time

At first I agreed with some of the other reviewers that the characters seemed unlikable, but as I continued to listen, I found that the book was really a lovely story about a young woman finding herself after years of letting people mistreat her (and mistreating herself). It made me think about that process in my own life and I unexpectedly teared up when the book ended. I highly recommend this book—just be patient with Lucy while she figures things out!

What a wonderful production!

Amy McAlister is AMAZING. Her considerable vocal talents and impeccable accents bring this funny Marian Keyes story to another level. She’s truly a talented narrator who infuses every character (male/female, old/young, English, Irish, Scottish, Aussie, Arizonan, etc) with real life charm. What a true talent! This sorry is funny as hell and, as with most Keyes books, I wanted it to continue forever. Brava, ladies, BRAVA!

Cute

A bit long. Needed a little more editing. Took too long to get to the point.

Disappointing

The main character was such an immature fool that it was hard to care for her. So many times I said “c’mon” while listening. It was too much stupidity. I skipped chapters which is something I rarely do.
Marian Keyes is a better writer than this book.
