Acerca de esta escucha

In Mantle: The Best There Ever Was, Mickey Mantle biographer Tony Castro brings to life the man who is arguably not only the greatest ballplayer of his time but also the greatest ballplayer of all time. Castro offers illuminating new insight into Mantle's extraordinary career, including the head-turning conclusion based on the evolution of analytics that the beloved Yankee switch-hitting slugger may ultimately win acclaim as having fulfilled the weighty expectations once placed on him: of being greater than even Babe Ruth. Mantle himself believed he would one day be the one to break Ruth's single season home run record.

Mantle: The Best There Ever Was completes Castro's Mickey Mantle Trilogy that includes Mickey Mantle: America's Prodigal Son, which the New York Times has called the best biography ever written about the Hall of Fame icon, and DiMag & Mick: Sibling Rivals, Yankee Blood Brothers. Its publication comes on the eve of the commemoration of the 25th anniversary of Mantle's death.

Loved this presentation.

Loved it. The Mick is one of my favorites. A lot of blanks have been filled in about Mickey. He was GREAT! But his life seems like a Greek Tragedy. The root cause for both his greatness and sadness was his father, Mutt Mantle. I completed this audiobook in two days because it was so interesting. If Mickey would have taken care of himself, the sky was the limit.

A Great Book on Mantle

I enjoyed Mantle: The Best There Ever Was by Tony Castro, I got a good feel of why Mantle is one of or possibly the most admired players in baseball. I liked the format of this book far more than The Last Boy also, I had trouble staying interested in that book.
Of the Mantle books I have found on Audible this one is the best, but I would also love in the future a book that really accounts the blow by blow of every season with those iconic Yankee teams, this book really hits on the key moments and still gives you a good feel for Mickey’s career.

Jane Leavy - Last Boy is Better

All baseball fans will enjoy this book as did I. However, Jane Leavy’s The Last Boy is better and probably a more honest account of the good, bad, and ugly of Mickey’s life and career.

Additionally, as much as I love the Mick and his tragic hero persona, there is no way he was the best that ever was. He very well is underrated when modern metrics are used (especially looking at OBP) and may have been the greatest if not for the injury in the 51 series but stats don’t lie. Aaron, Musial, Robinson, maybe Clemente we’re all better.
