Acerca de esta escucha
An unforgettable coming-of-age novel that becomes a profound mediation on life, death, and lifelong friendship.
Everyone has a Tully Dawson: the friend who defines your life.
In the summer of 1986, in a small Scottish town, James and Tully ignite a brilliant friendship based on music, films, and the rebel spirit. With school over and the locked world of their fathers before them, they rush toward the climax of their youth: a magical weekend in Manchester, the epicenter of everything that inspires them in working-class Britain. There, against the greatest soundtrack ever recorded, a vow is made: to go at life differently.
Thirty years on, half a life away, the phone rings. Tully has news - news that forces the lifelong friends to confront their own mortality head-on. What follows is an incredibly moving examination of the responsibilities and obligations we have to those we love. Mayflies is at once a finely tuned drama about the delicacy and impermanence of human connection and an urgent inquiry into some of the most important questions of all: Who are we? What do we owe to our friends? And what does it mean to love another person amid tragedy?

Tuscany, 1944: As Allied troops advance and bombs fall around deserted villages, a young English soldier, Ulysses Temper, finds himself in the wine cellar of a deserted villa. There, he has a chance encounter with Evelyn Skinner, a middle-aged art historian who has come to Italy to salvage paintings from the ruins and recall long-forgotten memories of her own youth. In each other, Ulysses and Evelyn find a kindred spirit amidst the rubble of war-torn Italy, and set off on a course of events that will shape Ulysses's life for the next four decades.

Born under different stars—Mungo a Protestant and James a Catholic—they should be sworn enemies if they’re to be seen as men at all. Their environment is a hyper-masculine and sectarian one, for gangs of young men and the violence they might dole out dominate the Glaswegian estate where they live. And yet against all odds Mungo and James become best friends as they find a sanctuary in the pigeon dovecote that James has built for his prize racing birds.

Shuggie’s mother Agnes walks a wayward path: She is Shuggie’s guiding light but a burden for him and his siblings. She dreams of a house with its own front door while she flicks through the pages of the Freemans catalogue, ordering a little happiness on credit, anything to brighten up her grey life. Married to a philandering taxi-driver husband, Agnes keeps her pride by looking good - her beehive, make-up, and pearly-white false teeth offer a glamourous image of a Glaswegian Elizabeth Taylor.

It’s 1914, and World War I is ceaselessly churning through thousands of young men on both sides of the fight. The violence of the front feels far away to Henry Gaunt, Sidney Ellwood and the rest of their classmates, safely ensconced in their idyllic boarding school in the English countryside. Poet Ocean Vuong’s debut novel is a shattering portrait of a family, a first love, and the redemptive power of storytelling. On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous is a letter from a son to a mother who cannot read. Written when the speaker, Little Dog, is in his late 20s, the letter unearths a family’s history that began before he was born - a history whose epicenter is rooted in Vietnam - and serves as a doorway into parts of his life his mother has never known, all of it leading to an unforgettable revelation.

As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

Bonnie hides the corpse and then carefully wipes away any evidence she was ever there. Bonnie is a music teacher who spent a long, hot summer in London rehearsing with a band to play at a friend’s wedding. It was supposed to be fun, but the band members find the complicated knots of their friendships - some old, some new - unraveling as the days themselves unwind.

Campbell Flynn, art historian, professor, and fêted fixture of the literati, always knew that when his life came crashing down, it would happen in public—yet he never imagined that a single year in London would expose so much. He’s never taken other people half as seriously as they take themselves, which is the first of his mistakes. The second is a new project: opportunistic and precisely calibrated to rake in a fortune.

Historia
I've spent my life in a cage designed by my father—at his mercy and whim. I'm penniless, powerless, and frequently reminded that I'm nothing more than property to barter amongst his powerful friends. Until the eve of my twentieth birthday, when I learn my future holds more misery than my past. It's the day he's waited for—the day he sells my hand to the highest bidder. I have no choice and no voice. But that's not how my story ends. They say a wolf will chew off its foot to escape a trap, and that's precisely what I do when I flee into the arms of my father's greatest enemy.

Say What?
There is probably a fine, even brilliant story here. It’s about a gang of smart but struggling Scottish kids who spend a glorious weekend in Manchester, causing mischief while attending a rock festival in the 1980s. The kids are likeable, and their adventures are fun. In the second half, 30 years later, illness strikes and the tone shifts. All good, but…
The narration is terrible! I couldn’t understand a third of the book. The author/narrator’s accent was so thick, especially when he adopted voices for his characters, that I often had no idea what was being said. Often he slurred his characters’ speech, perhaps because they were drinking, but that made it worse.
Novelists should stop narrating their own books. A professional narrator would have been able to enunciate better, even with an accent. This is tragic, because the book is an original and probably very well written story.

Lovely story
I cannot believe the people who have commented that they felt they were listening to a “foreign” language and couldn’t continue the audiobook. It’s a book by a Scottish author about Scottish characters, largely set in Scotland! What did they expect?? The fact that the author read the audiobook is one of the reasons I loved it! He’s an excellent performer as well as author. Very touching story about friendship, love, and death. Laughed out loud at some of the turns of phrase and found the grappling with medically assisted death very poignant.

Narrator Accent
I tried starting over several times. I just couldn’t understand the narrator / author. He has an interesting accent and I am sure it is authentic but it was truly like I was listening to a book read in a foreign language. This is the risk you take when using Audiobooks. Be sure to check first
