Klaus Mann: Mephisto Roman einer Karriere, gelesen von Ingolf Kloss. Klaus Mann schrieb seinen "Mephisto" in weniger als einem halben Jahr. Begonnen hatte er den Roman Anfang 1936 und im Mai desselben Jahres war das Manuskript bereits fertig. Kurz darauf erschien er in einer Pariser Zeitung als Vorabdruck. In der Hauptrolle glänzte der berühmte und ganz reale Schauspieler, Gustaf Gründgens, hier im Buch unter dem Namen Hendrik Höfgen benannt. Zweifelsfrei handelt es sich unverkennbar um einen Schlüsselroman, auch wenn der Verfasser auf der letzten Seite beteuerte, dass alle Personen des Buchs lediglich "Typen" darstellten, keinesfalls "Porträts" seien. Jedenfalls lässt sich nicht leugnen, dass sehr viele Persönlichkeiten leicht wiedererkennbar sind, neben Gründgens selbst entdecken wir Hans Otto (Otto Ulrichs), Elisabeth Bergner (Dora Martin), Max Reinhardt (Der Professor), Herbert Ihering (Ihrig), Carl Sternheim (Theophil Marder), Gottfried Benn (Benjamin Pelz), Emmy Göring (Lotte Lindenthal), Pamela Wedekind (Nicoletta von Niebuhr), Thomas und Erika Mann (Geheimrat Bruckner und Barbara Bruckner) sowie viele andere. Es ist, wie der Autor selbst in seinem Tagebuch notierte, ein "kaltes und böses Buch." Denn die eigentliche These des Romans beruht auf folgender Aussage: Gründgens diente sich nicht etwa aus politischer Überzeugung dem NS-Regime an, sondern aus purem Opportunismus. Er war dazu bereit, für seine künstlerische Karriere unter den gegebenen Voraussetzungen, jeden Preis zu zahlen, bis hin zur Selbstverleugnung und zum Verrat an seinen einstigen Weggefährten. Diese Kernthese ist es, die dieses Buch so "kalt und böse" und so entlarvend macht. Seine Schärfe speist sich allerdings auch aus einem ganz privaten Hintergrund: Klaus Manns Verachtung gegenüber seinem charismatischen Ex-Schwager. Gründgens war noch vor der NS-Zeit mit der Schwester des Autors Erika Mann verheiratet, die im Roman Barbara heißt und deren feinfühliges Porträt eines der gelungensten des ganzen Buches ist. Klaus Mann kennt also seinen Protagonisten sehr genau, er hat ihn nicht erfunden, sondern bis ins Innerste erforscht und dargestellt, gerade das verleiht dem Text seine unvergleichliche Verve. Wahrscheinlich ist niemals eine andere reale Person je intensiver als Romanfigur durchleuchtet worden, wie eben dieser Gustaf Gründgens. Daher ist schon verständlich, dass der Porträtierte bzw. sein Rechtsnachfolger ein Erscheinen des Buchs im Nachkriegsdeutschland mit allen Mitteln zu verhindern suchten - was ihnen teilweise auch gelang. Aber letzten Endes lehrt uns die Geschichte, dass man ihren Progress auch auf diese Weise niemals gänzlich aufhalten kann.
