Good premise but I lost interest

I liked the idea of the story but it drug on so much that I lost interest.

Read this AFTER “Her Scandalous Pursuit”

This should be the second book in the series. “Her Scandalous Pursuit” details Thisbe’s and Desmond’s story. In “Mesmerized” they are already married and it’s about 7 years later.

Enjoyable.

This had a bit of a penny dreadful tone to it which was a nice change of pace to a lot of the other provincial novels in the Plus Catalogue.

New idea old formula

I liked the idea of utilizing a professional woman who runs her own business to take on the problem as the expert for hire. This character was an original, (unfortunately the only one in this story) whose talents, experience, and knowledge of the con artists of the occult world was hired by Stephen to debunk a clairvoyant taking advantage of his mother. The story was interesting as long as it focused on the clairvoyant’s tricks of the trade but went off the rails with the parallel centuries earlier storyline that was never adequately explained. The villain was easily recognized with a predictable role and contrived behavior resulting in little to no suspense to provide tension, which as we know, is certain death to a gothic romance. I do not recommend this book to readers who like a taunt, suspenseful, and edge of your seat gothic romance - they will be disappointed. For readers who would enjoy a different setting and unusual premise with a historical romance, rather than gothic romance, I am happy to recommend this book. I identify the book as “gothic” due to the location, a dark, imposing manor, overtones of the occult, the use of the clairvoyant, and the perceived threat from the dead with a grudge.
The narrator had a challenge due to the number of characters, however I felt that he did an adequate job distinguishing each one. I would suggest that he pay attention to his voice inflection and the scene’s emotional content which was inappropriately lilting at times.
