Resumen del Editor

Mike Busch on Airplane Ownership is the much-awaited sequel to his previous books Manifesto and Engines. In this two-volume set, Busch distills his wisdom from his more than 50 years as an aircraft owner. He brings his refreshingly commonsense and often outside-the-box approach to every aspect of owning and operating a general aviation aircraft.

Volume 1 covers selecting, purchasing, insuring, and maintaining an aircraft. Busch emphasizes that it is the aircraft owner—not his mechanics—who bears the regulatory responsibility for airworthiness. He discusses how to choose the right mechanic or shop and how to manage the maintenance they perform. Busch dissects the much-dreaded annual inspection, and how owners can keep it from spiraling out of control. He offers guidance about the all-important post-maintenance test flight, and how to deal with an owner’s worst nightmare: a mechanical breakdown far from home.

Volume 2 (publication date Christmas 2019) covers the rules and regulations that every aircraft owner needs to know but is often not taught. It discusses owner-performed maintenance, troubleshooting techniques, aircraft modifications, twins, and resolving owner/mechanic disputes. It takes the reader on a guided tour through the various aircraft systems, discussing the operation, care and feeding of each one. It offers guidance on how to fly safely and efficiently, including leaning techniques, air-speed and altitude selection, and more. The volume concludes with Busch’s thoughts about the future of owner-flown general aviation and where we’re headed.

If you own an aircraft (or want to), these books will be an invaluable addition to your aviation library.

Great listen, Mike Bush is a gift to airplane owners and mechanics

It’s an amazing book. And I’ve enjoyed all of Mike Bush’s books. FYI Chapter 3 recording goes back from prebuy to intro.

Furthering My Knowledge In Aviation

I have been in love aviation since 2010, when I was eight years old. And since then I’ve always been looking for ways to gain as much knowledge about the industry as I could. Both as a private pilot who wants to fly for a living, and an upcoming A&P. I’ve been listening to just about every webinar published on the Savvy Aviation YouTube channel since I became interested in aircraft maintenance in late 2021, while also reading and listening to the audiobooks Manifesto, Engines, and this new edition, Aircraft Ownership. One of these days in my career in aviation, I myself would like to own an airplane. Mainly a Cessna 182 because of how tough they are. And because they have the best sounding engine in my opinion.

All three of these books have given me so much knowledge not just on aircraft maintenance, but on the whole industry itself. And I will be buying the physical copy of Aircraft Ownership Vol 2 here soon.

Thank you Mike Busch for making these books, and spreading your encyclopedic knowledge of airplanes.

Essential information for general aviation pilots and airplane owners!

What a great listen! Building on the groundwork laid by his Manifesto and Engines books, Mike Busch shares his nearly 6 decades of general aviation knowledge and experience in an engaging and relatable fashion. Each main point is driven home by multiple illustrative stories from Mike’s personal experience as a pilot, A&P, IA, and master maintenance consultant/guru. His service to the general aviation community is laudable and very much appreciated. I eagerly anticipate the arrival of the second volume of Mike’s Airplane Ownership series in audio book form.

Very Useful for Any Aircraft Owner, Renter, Aspiring Owner, Mechanic

This book has lots of useful information and perspective for anybody involved in the maintenance and operation of aircraft -- general aviation (GA) airplanes specifically. If you are already an aircraft owner, operator, or mechanic, there is a lot of food for thought and action here. If you aspire to own an aircraft, there is even more here for you to think about. Read it and consider the information carefully. You will be glad you did.

Though not discussed in depth in this book, the author is an expert on data-driven decision making as it pertains to GA aircraft maintenance. His company, Savvy Aviation, provides maintenance management, management of pre-buy examinations, and aircraft breakdown assistance. The company has collected an immense amount of data that underpins their recommendations. In my view, that means their informed opinions are hugely valuable to anybody making decisions related to GA aircraft maintenance.
