A widow at just thirty-seven and never able to conceive, Miriam King has no purpose in life beyond the memories of her beloved husband. Adding to her pain, her close friend Eileen Smoker has recently died. Losing both her husband and friend, so close together, has Miriam deeply depressed, worsening her physical pain. In despair she seeks advice from midwife Lavina Deiner, wife to the healer Samuel.
David Smoker is grieving the loss of his wife and also the loss of his good friend Gabriel King. When David comes up with a plan to ease the loneliness for both himself and Miriam, he knows he must work hard to convince her. However when a shocking revelation occurs Miriam is devastated and refuses David’s attentions.
When the midwife learns of the callous act toward Miriam, she is infuriated and puts into action a plan to help her. But Miriam is resolute, and makes a shattering decision that will put her life on a different course.
